Background

9Gem is an Australian free-to-air multichannel operated by the Nine Network. Originally launched in 2010 as GEM on Freeview Channel 90, The channel shows drama content, often from British producers such as the BBC and companies owned by ITV. During the weekly daytime slot and on weekends, the channel shows classic movies from producers such as MGM, United Artists and Warner Bros as well as British producers such as Ealing Studios, London Films and British Lion Films. In 2015, as part of a network-wide rebrand, GEM was rebranded 9Gem and shifted to Channel 92 to make way for Nine's relaunched HD feed. In 2019, an HD simulcast of 9Gem was launched on Channel 95. With this new simulcast, Nine would use 9Gem as a temporary sports multichannel during big events such as the Ashes, the Cricket World Cup and the Australian Open, with 9Gem taking over when the main channel needed to break from the coverage for news bulletins and other programming.

1st ID (2010-2018)

Visuals: A number of CGI ribbons appear on screen from various angles, culminating a number of sparks accumulating to form the GEM logo (later the 9Gem logo)

Variants:

• A short version of this logo exists.
• Starting in 2015 the text was changed to their current name, "9Gem" with the Nine dots on the left.
• There is a slight variation used for the “GEM At The Movies” block. This was carried over after the rebrand as “9Gem At The Movies”.
• There is a variant showing clips of nature programming with the text "Nature In HD" displayed below, before cutting to the regular logo at the end. A similar variant shows clips from (in order of appearance) Antiques Roadshow, Auction Hunters and Picker Sisters instead.

Technique: CGI animation.

Audio: A ambient synth tune ending with a voice saying "Gem".

Music/Sounds Variants: The 9Gem variants exclude the "Gem" voice at the end.

Availability: Extinct.

2nd ID (2010-2015)

Visuals: On a black background we see orange-pink-red swirling lines flying around then more coming and it changes to another scene where the swirls are shining with flashing lights and then the sparkling dust and the flash merged to reveal the word "GEM" in pink with the spotlight on the logo.

Technique: CGI

Audio: A cool techno track culminating in a voice whispering "Gem" as the logo forms up.

Availability: Seen regularly on Gem during its time. Currently preserved via off-air recordings.

3rd ID (2015-2017) (Christmas Variant)

• 

Visuals: Something liquid-like appears on screen. Cutting to a wider view it becomes apparent this is a dark Christmas bauble.Then, cut to more shots of dark, liquid-esque patters, silver stars and finally more baubles as the GEM logo appears on screen.

Audio: Two tracks were used.

• In 2016, a cool synth-based theme with sleigh bells was used
• In 2017, a more triumphant theme was used and a voiceover is added saying "Merry Christmas Australia!"

Availability: Seen regularly on Gem during its time. Currently preserved via off-air recordings.

4th ID (2018-)

• 

Visuals: We see a purple-magenta circle with spirals in it then it cuts into some clips from TV shows and the capital letter "G" appears on the circle with other rings appearing and merged into the letter with the nine dots and the word "Gem" shows when the letters "e" and "m" joined the Capital letter "G"

Variants:

• A 10-second version of this logo exists. This is used more frequently than the full version.
• There's also a 5-second version.
