Background

AS Films, S.A. was a Spanish film production and distribution company. The company's origins can be traced back to the collaboration of director Vicente Escrivá and Ramón Llidó, who founded both Aspa Films Producción and AS Films, with the latter serving as the distribution arm. Aspa Films Producción commenced operations in 1951, coinciding with the release of Un Traje Blanco, while AS Films was established in 1955, around the time of El Canto del Gallo.

AS Films quickly garnered attention with a series of notable releases, including Recluta con Niño, Los Ladrones somos Gente Honrada and Un Traje Blanco. However, internal changes ensued following the departure of Escrivà and Llidó, alongside the separation from director Rafael Gil around 1958. This transition led to the formation of AS Films Producción, while Aspa Films continued independently.

During the Franco era, AS Films forged strategic distribution partnerships with major studios such as Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Columbia Pictures, showcasing acclaimed works like The Prince and the Showgirl, Gigi, and The Harder the Fall. Juan Couret played a significant role in the early management of the company, as evidenced by AS advertising materials.

In 1971, AS Films merged with Interpeninsular Films, S.A., forming Distribuidoras Cinematograficas Asociados S.A.. Notable executives, including Juan Couret and Miguel Tudela, assumed leadership positions within the newly formed entity, although specific details regarding Couret's continued involvement remain unclear due to limited archival information.
