AVID:Requests for Comment/Official AVID Subreddit

While the proposal as written has  failed, this should not be taken as a "never happening", but as more of a "not yet". However, I have followed Raidarr's advice and least set up a placeholder subreddit that just links to here and the channel. That way we have a name reserved in case someone wants to misuse it. Official AVID Subreddit

Should we have an official AVID subreddit? It will be a good alternative for users that want to talk about logos and the wiki but don't have a Discord account.

1. Originally Oppose and then Abstain, but changed to Support after reading Raidarr's suggestion on the Discord (which I'm using as my justification).
   
   Hear me out: we aren't ready to support an active subreddit. Yet. But we should start one up, keeping it relatively inactive for now (only linking to this site and the YouTube channel) so nobody tries to create an unauthorized AVID subreddit and use up the name down the line (especially if that somebody has a grudge against us or isn't willing to let us have it). Then, when we're sure we are ready (maybe a few years, tops), we can make that sub much more active. Just lay out some groundwork for the future. · Talk · Edits 19:09, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

1.  Abstain I don’t want to be too harsh about this suggestion because I think it’s a good suggestion to allow people to have another means of being a community. However, I think it would be great to have sometime in 2024/2025 once a structure about how the moderation, rules and other elements are put together. As another note, perhaps it would be great to try to use this one that I found for any users interested in having somewhere on there.

It’s a great suggestion and it might be helpful to plan out how you want the subreddit to be organized and structured with the rules and other things that might help make it a perfect place to be on the platform. Friendly Mountain12 (talk) 05:58, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

1.  Abstain It's not a big deal and it would likely be in disuse for a long time, but it's not a bad idea. It might be better to make one officially than for someone completely unaccountable to make an 'unofficial' one at prime real estate like r/avidwiki that will be a thorn on the wiki later. "Darn, wish we handled it sooner". Regarding some of the opposes: The wiki isn't all that small. You may be surprised how small things subreddits can be made for. I think Solarstrike makes a good point about not putting all your eggs into Discord (and for that matter, the forum feature). Obviously the reddit would be a backup and not the encouraged outlet, but if AVID has any long term aspirations then really, why is it too early? The main weakness is that someone trusted by avid staff will just need to move the ball and be the one to keep an (intermittent) eye on the place, and redirect them to discord or the forum if they're doing anything advanced. The main trouble I think would be the initial appearance of LTAs and the wiki's undesirables who have an axe to grind that need to be handled since you'll have given them a shiny new toy to then take away. In so many words however: don't underestimate the value of planning ahead. This community is rather serious and it already has its foot on other platforms like youtube, I wouldn't want shortsightedness in something like this to hold it back. --Raidarr (talk) 08:35, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

6. Oppose at this stage of AVID's lifespan. While a subreddit could eventually benefit us if we grow to a much larger size, at this stage when we're still mostly huddled together in one place it's best to keep things with our existing means of communication - though if you do want to make a general-purpose logo community subreddit, knock yourself out - you just won't get the official endorsement from us. That being said, I do have a comment to make to the other opposing members - some people do not wish to centralize community discussions into a Discord server for fears of a lack of preservation in the long run. While yes, it IS convenient in the shorter term...what happens if we undergo another leadership change or for some reason the archives get wiped? How do we think long-term for our community's future?
