United Kingdom/Australia
1st Screen (January 1981-1989)
Visuals: On a powder blue background, the word "WARNING" in a large white font appears at the top, and the CIC Video logo does so at the bottom. Between them is white warning text scrolling upward.
Variants:
- An early version without the chain on the "I" exists.
- On pre-1986 releases, the warning text does not scroll and the text is also different.
- The words "Not for sale or hire in Australia and New Zealand" were not present until 1987. The variant without those exact words appears on the 1986 UK VHS releases of Back to the Future (Universal) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Paramount), among many others.
Technique: A still graphic, or computer effects.
Audio: None.
Audio Variant: On the UK LaserDisc release of Jaws (and possibly other titles), the music from the 1978 DiscoVision logo is used.
Availability:
- Appears on home media releases by CIC Video from the time-period until 1989.
- There is evidence to suggest that CIC's first release of a Universal film was that of Jaws and its first release of a Paramount film was that of Saturday Night Fever; this would mean that the warning debuted on original pressings of both films. (Universal releases from CIC ran in a sequence beginning with 1001 and Paramount releases from CIC ran in a sequence beginning with 2001.)
- One of the last releases with this warning was the 1989 UK VHS release of Biloxi Blues.
2nd Screen (1988-1991)
Visuals: On a black-dark blue gradient starfield background, "WARNING" fades in at the top in white. Below it, generic warning text (also in white) scrolls upward.
Variant: On Australian releases, different warning text scrolls up with the word "WARNING". Later releases have a different font.
Technique: Computer effects.
Audio: None.
Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases of the era.
3rd Screen (1991-1997)
Visuals:
- Opening: Over a black/blue gradient background, the word "WARNING" is shown, along with the following text, which is in Times New Roman:
this video recording for home use
only. All other rights are reserved.
For further details please refer to
the end of the programme.
- Closing: Over the same background, the following text in white scrolls upward:
The copyright owner has
licensed the film (including
its soundtrack) recorded on
this video recording for home
use only. All other rights
are reserved.
The definition of home use
excludes the use of this video
recording at locations such as
clubs, coaches, hospitals,
hotels, oil rigs, prisons and
schools.
Any unauthorised copying,
editing, exhibition, sale,
rental, lending or any other
kinds of trading, public
performance or transmission
by air, cable or otherwise of
this video recording or any
part thereof is strictly
prohibited and any such action
establishes liability for civil
action and may give rise to
criminal prosecution.
Not for sale or hire in
Australia/New Zealand.
Variants:
- Post-1994 releases use a plain different font called Helvetica.
- On Australian VHS releases, a different set of text is used. In addition, the word "WARNING" may not be underlined.
- Before 1994, it segues to the 1991 CIC Video logo.
Technique: A still computerized graphic in the regular version, 2D computer animation in the alternate variant.
Audio: None.
Availability: Seen on CIC Video releases of the era, such as the 1996 UK VHS release of Beavis and Butt-head: There Goes the Neighbourhood.
4th Screen (1996-2001)
Visuals:
- Opening: On the same aurora background as the era's CIC Video logo is the underlined word "WARNING" and the text from the previous screen in a white Russell Square Regular font. Behind it is a faded "CIC" in its familiar font.
- Closing: Against the same background with the faded CIC, the same longer set of warning text from the previous screens scrolls up. When the text is finished scrolling upward, the background stays on for two additional seconds before the screen fades out.
Variants:
- On early DreamWorks Home Entertainment releases, technically under the CIC label, the faded CIC is absent and the text has darker shadows. It was reused, however, when Paramount Home Entertainment used it internationally from late 1999-early 2001.
- At the end of early DreamWorks Home Entertainment releases, the same longer set of warning text scrolls up as before, but scaled slightly, has minor spelling and grammar, and before the last paragraph of the warning text finishes scrolling upward, the background fades out early with it slightly. This was likely used as a prototype version.
- At the end of later DreamWorks and Paramount Home Entertainment releases, it's the same as before, but the typos are fixed and it finishes scrolling upwards before the background fades out.
- On time coded tapes, the opening warning is different. It starts off as the faded CIC zooms in to the center of the viewer's screen (in style of the 1996-1999 logo). Then, the different warning text scrolls up in a Univers Condensed font.
Technique: Computer effects.
Audio: None.
Availability:
- Seen on 1996-1999 CIC Video releases such as the 1999 UK VHS release of The Rugrats Movie
- It was also used on international Paramount releases until 2001. [Examples?]
