Background

DIC Home Entertainment was the home entertainment arm of DIC Entertainment Corporation (later "Cookie Jar Entertainment, Inc.", then "DHX Media" and now "WildBrain"), established in 2001 to distribute DIC releases on video. Previously, DIC released their material through their "DIC Video" and "DIC Toon-Time Video" labels.

DIC Video

(1987)

Logo: On a black/purple gradient background, we see the word "DiC" in its standard font. Below it is the word “VIDEO” sandwiched between two white lines. A constellation is above the whole thing.

Technique: None, if you don't count the fade in/out.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Extremely rare. This is only known to appear on Heathcliff releases released by Golden Books Family Entertainment. Most releases that use this logo on the packaging (like other Golden Book Video or Kids Klassics releases) just use the regular 1987 logo or the "PRESENTS" version of the latter.

DIC Toon-Time Video

1st Logo (1991)

Logo: Same as the 1990 version of the "Kid in Bed" logo, except the spiked star is replaced with just a shining star in the distance. Then, a crudely-drawn yellow cartoon TV emerges from it. It has a blue screen and the DIC logo (in silver). "TOON-TIME VIDEO" ("TOON-TIME" is in blue while "VIDEO" is in purple) appears below it in a crude font, with 2 eyes in place of the 2 "O"s in "TOON".

Technique: Zooming effects for the TV.

Music/Sounds: Same as the TV counterpart.

Availability: Extremely rare. Only known to appear on the 1991 BMG Kidz release of Wish Kid. It might have been seen on other BMG Kidz DIC releases as well. When Buena Vista Home Video reissued these tapes, this logo was plastered with the standard 1990 DIC logo.

2nd Logo (June 7, 1994-July 12, 2000)

Logo: Against a gray background, the yellow TV from before with a blue screen zooms out, rocking left and right as it does so, and then settles the center of the screen against an egg-shaped circle. Then, a button on the right side of the TV flashes, the TV screen lights up, and the DIC logo (with "DiC" in it's standard font in blue) appears in the center. Then, "TOON•TIME VIDEO", in blue and in a different font, appears in blue.

Technique: Standard DIC-quality animation.

Music/Sounds: Same as the 1990 DiC logo, with whooshing sounds added as the TV zooms out, a thud as the button flashes, and a brief cymbal when the DIC logo appears and flashes.

Availability: Very rare. Appears on DIC VHS releases distributed by Buena Vista Home Video.

  • This logo is seen on VHS releases of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (Some releases have the standard 1990 DIC logo), Sonic the Hedgehog (SATAM), Double Dragon, Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, Rimba's Island, Old McDonald's Sing-a-Long Farm, What-a-Mess, and Sailor Moon, as well as Super Mario Bros. Super Christmas Adventures!, The Legend of the Hawaiian Slammers, Jingle Bell Rock, Mummies Alive!: The Legend Begins, and Inspector Gadget: Gadget's Greatest Gadgets.
  • Some DIC VHS releases have the print logo on the packaging but have the standard 1990 DIC logo on-screen.
  • It first appeared on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog tapes Sonic's Song and Road Hog, and the Double Dragon tapes The Legend Begins and Deadly Mutants, and last appeared on Sailor Moon: The Doom Tree Series.

The Incredible World of DIC Home Entertainment

1st Logo (August 28, 2001-December 23, 2008)

Logo: Just the normal DIC logo used at the time, but with "Home Entertainment" in a blue script font zooming out below. The globe part of the logo itself is a little bit smaller than the regular version.

Technique: Same as the TV counterpart, with added zooming effects for the text.

Music/Sounds: The sped-up version of the normal 2001 DIC tune.

Availability: Common.

  • It appears on all Lions Gate Home Entertainment, Sterling Entertainment and pre-2009 NCircle Entertainment distributed releases of DIC shows.
  • It sometimes plasters older DIC logos on Sterling and NCircle releases, although later NCircle releases keep the older logos on pre-2001 DIC material.
  • It first appeared on the DVD releases of Sabrina: The Animated Series - Sabrina's World and Mummies Alive! (the VHS versions use the standard 2001 DIC logo for an unknown reason), and last appeared on the NCircle reissues of Sylvanian Families - The Big Adventure, Siegfried and Roy - Masters of the Impossible and Sonic the Hedgehog - Super Sonic. Releases after 2008 have the Cookie Jar logo.

2nd Logo (2002-2005?)

Logo: We see the words "The Incredible World of" written in its usual script font (next to a simplified version of the DIC globe) attached to a set of yellow helicopter rotors. It flies outward to a gray helipad situated on top of some dark letters, which rest on a large red table. As the logo lands, the rotors stop spinning and fold up inside the logo. Then, the letters below light up, revealing that they read "FEATURE PRESENTATION".

Variant: There is a version of the logo that says "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" on one line instead of "FEATURE PRESENTATION".

Technique: CGI animation.

Music/Sounds: The sounds of the rotors spinning, some whirring/clicking sounds as the rotors retract, and a weird "sproing" as the lights turn on. The "HOME ENTERTAINMENT" version uses lesser-quality stock sounds.

Availability:

  • "Feature Presentation" - Uncommon. It appears at the beginning of all 13 of the DIC Movie Toons (which includes Inspector Gadget's Last Case and Dennis the Menace in Cruise Control). It is always preceded by the 2001 MGM logo on the original North American MGM Home Entertainment prints of the movies. Cookie Jar prints of the movies sometimes remove this logo, and so start off the movie without any logos at all.
  • "Home Entertainment" - Extremely rare. It appears on various promotional DIC DVDs given away with General Mills cereals in 2004. It was also seen on The Littles: The Complete Unedited Series (from S'More Entertainment) as part of a Bonus Feature that showcases other DIC logos.
