Background

Harvey and Bob Weinstein founded Dimension Films in 1991 as a genre film division of Miramax Films; it later became a part of The Weinstein Company after they left. In 2018, the company alongside TWC was purchased in a bankruptcy auction by Lantern Entertainment. Today, Dimension operates as an in-name-only unit to hold the copyright on its library, and its pre-October 2005 films (except Mr. 3000, which is still owned by Disney due to it also being co-produced and distributed by Touchstone Pictures; and the UK rights to The Brothers Grimm from Miramax as of 2015 time) are partially owned by Paramount Pictures through Paramount Global's 49% stake in Miramax.

(September 11, 1992-October 11, 2019)

Logo: On a black background, a set of blueish lines zoom out in the left side of the screen. As it zooms out, it gradually lights up to reveal that it is the word "DIMENSION" in a bold, italic Eurostile font. When the logo reaches a comfortable distance, it lights up completely as "FILMS" wipes underneath it, in spaced-out letters.

Variants:

  • An earlier version exists. Below the word "DIMENSION", a byline "A DIVISION OF MIRAMAX FILMS" appears. In this version, the effect looks a bit smoother.
  • A 3-D version has the logo zooming in against a purple cloudy background, then bulging from the center, breaking letter by letter, and flying toward the screen.
  • A 3-D in-credit logo was used in the late 2000s.
  • A sped-up version of the logo ("TELEVISION" replacing "FILMS") is used for the 2017 extended logo for its television label.
  • On some films, such as Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, The Prophecy, Mr. 3000, and Senseless, the "DIMENSION" text has a purple tint.
  • On an Italian HDTV airing of The Brothers Grimm (2005), the Dimension Films logo was repeated twice due to a sloppy editing mistake. What's worse is that the print had the 1987 Miramax logo at the front!
  • On Below, the logo fades into a sea background, starting the movie.
  • On Once Upon A Time In Mexico, the logo is tinted in orange.
  • On Cursed, the logo then cuts to the opening credits.

Technique: Computer animation.

Music/Sounds: None, or the opening sounds/music from any given soundtrack.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On a few English-dubbed Jackie Chan movies, there's a gong sound and a whoosh when "DIMENSION" shines.
  • On The Longshots, a light string orchestra fanfare is heard.

Availability: Common for pre-October 2005 films (up to Venom (2005)) and somewhat uncommon for the October 2005-2019 films due to newer prints either being plastered by the Lantern Entertainment logo or the 2013 Lionsgate Films logo due to the close association with Weinstein and his controversies, though it's still reasonably easy to find on these titles with older prints.

  • Seen on most Dimension titles like Spy Kids, Scary Movie, Cursed, Scream, and Mimic. The 3-D version appears on Spy Kids 3: Game Over and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
  • The early version with the Miramax byline is extremely rare, as on current releases of films such as Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, and Godzilla vs. Biolante, it is omitted.
  • This logo is omitted on some versions of The Brothers Grimm that feature a Miramax International logo (though MGM's is kept). However, it can be seen on the Echo Bridge DVD releases of Dust Devil and the Arrow Video release of Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth within the Hellraiser UK Blu-ray trilogy Set (and its US Scarlet Box set equivalent), though some prints of the latter have it plastered by the current Dimension Films logo alongside the 2011 Miramax logo, or with Lakeshore International on the Italian Koch Media Blu-ray.
  • The version with the gong sound can be seen on Supercop and Operation Condor, as well as the 2001 DVD of the reedited version of Jackie Chan's Project A.
  • It is unknown if this logo can be seen on the A-Pix Entertainment VHS of The Evil Within (AKA: Baby Blood).
  • It was last seen on international prints of Polaroid (2019).
