Background

Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer Films was founded in August 1983 by producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. Together, the duo produced some of the most successful films of the 1980s, including Flashdance, the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies, and Top Gun. The company didn't use a logo until the 1990 film Days of Thunder.

In December 1995, Bruckheimer dissolved his partnership with Simpson due to the latter's worsening drug addiction, and formed a new company later known as Jerry Bruckheimer Films; Simpson died from drug-related heart failure in January 1996. In 2003, the "Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer" name was revived by Bruckheimer for the release of Bad Boys II out of respect for Simpson, and continues to be used for sequels to films that were originally produced with Simpson's involvement.

Logo (June 27, 1990-June 7, 1996, July 18, 2003-)

Visuals: The logo starts with sky blue clouds moving across the screen. Two bolts of lightning then strike and converge at the bottom as the clouds instantly turn orange. The screen zooms out into a box on a black background, as the orange text "DON SIMPSON/JERRY BRUCKHEIMER" (in a modified version of the Michaelangelo dont) appears below it, with the spaced-out text "FILMS" (in the same font) underneath it.

Trivia: This logo was designed by Tim Girvin, who has stated that the twin lightning bolts represent Simpson and Bruckheimer's "visionary alliance". A blog post about Girvin's involvement with this logo can be found here.

Variants:

  • A print version appears at the end of Bad Boys.
  • An early version just has the company name in white.
  • On Bad Boys II, L.A.'s Finest, and Bad Boys for Life, the logo is shortened and the text is smaller.
  • Starting in 2022, the logo was given a more enhanced look, with improved animation for the lighting, the screen zooming out faster, and the orange clouds becoming much darker. It was first seen on the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, debuted on the film itself (albeit as a variant), and the normal version debuted on Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
  • There exists a version without the text, which is only seen on trailers.
  • On Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the logo is tinted red.

Technique: Live-action footage mixed with 2D animation.

Audio: The sounds of lightning crackling, usually played alongside the opening theme of the movie.

Audio Variants:

  • On Days of Thunder (the first film to use this logo), the logo is also accompanied by wind sounds. The lightning crackling sounds remain intact here.
  • At the end of Disney-distributed movies, the logo is silent.
  • On Top Gun: Maverick, the opening theme of the movie is heard without any sounds at all.

Availability:

  • In its original run, this logo was seen on some films from 1990 until 1996, including Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, Dangerous Minds, and The Rock.
  • This logo was revived for Bad Boys II, Bad Boys for Life, Top Gun: Maverick, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, all of which were made following Don Simpson's death.
  • The version without the lightning box was on a teaser trailer for Days of Thunder, which can be found on the 1990 Paramount VHS release of Black Rain.
  • This was also seen on the TV shows Dangerous Minds (1996), Soldier of Fortune, Inc., and L.A.'s Finest.
