Background

KTLA, virtual channel 5 (UHF digital channel 35), is a CW-affiliated television station licensed to Los Angeles, California, United States. The station is the largest directly-owned property of Nexstar Media Group. KTLA's studios are located at the Sunset Bronson Studios on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, and its transmitter is located atop Mount Wilson. It is the second-largest CW affiliate by market size that is not owned and operated by either of the network's co-owners, Paramount Global or AT&T's Warner Bros. Discovery.

1st Logo (1947-1957)

Visuals: In a black and white version on a lake background, there is a mountain with twenty-two stars on top. The stars zoom in, and rearrange themselves to form an arc shape. The stars invert as a circle zooms out around them, forming a Paramount Pictures logo lookalike on a white background. Then, a radio tower fades on top of the mountain, with the tower transmitting signals. Then, the letters "KTLA" appears one-by-one in the middle of the tower before the transmitting abruptly stops. Afterwards, "Television Productions, Inc." writes below the mountain.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: An announcer saying "This is KTLA Television Los Angeles, owned and operated by Television Productions, Inc. A service of Paramount Pictures. With studios joining the Paramount often Hollywood, transmitting from Mount Wilson, California on television channel number 5 with frequency of 76 to 82 megacycles. Again tonight, we're ready to bring you a full evening of television entertainment, from now until 7 o'clock, watch the news go by, and listen to recorded music as you align your receivers for best reception of KTLA."

2nd Logo (1957-195?)

Visuals: Superimposed on the credits of The Polka Parade, a rectangle with "KTLA" on the left, a play button triangle with the word "CHANNEL" engraved in the middle and an outline of a circle with the large number "5" inside it fades in. Accompanying is the text "Produced in cooperation with" at the top.

Technique: Fading effects overlaid onto live-action.

Audio: The end theme of The Polka Parade.

Availability: Seen on The Polka Parade.

3rd Logo (1967-1977?)

Visuals: Four copies of the number "5" are spinning around a circle in the middle that they are attached to. Three of the numerals flash before they abruptly disappear. The sequence then cuts to the orange 5 quickly zooming out before blue text reading "GWB-LOS ANGELES" fades in below. Finally, the letters "KTLA" zoom into the circle attached to the 5.

Technique: Backlit cel animation.

Audio: A bombastic fanfare, with the announcer saying: "This is channel 5, KTLA Los Angeles. With the reminder not to waste energy, how many lights are on in your house right now?".

4th Logo (1977-1981)

Visuals: There are three different idents used over the years, each showcasing a rounded rectangle with the number "5" in the center:

  • 1977: On a brown background, the "5" logo appears on the left, and the word "KTLA Los Angeles" wipes in vertically.
  • 1978: On a black background, the camera pans up over a closeup shot of the "5" logo, now in gold. After the camera pans away from the logo, another copy of it appears from the right. The camera turns to place the logo in the center, then the words "KTLA LOS ANGELES" wipes in from the top on the bottom-right side of the logo.
  • 1979-1981: On a black background, a silver model of their "5" logo turns around and faces the screen. Then, a silver model of the word "KTLA" appears on the left side, turns around and faces the screen. As the name turns, the number "5" shines, and a flash for each letter appears, syncing with the announcer reading the station name.

  • Some airings of the 1979 ident have the model and the word switch places.
  • In a later airing of the 1979 ident, the flashes on each letter are off-sync with the voiceover.
