Background

North American Bumpers

1st Bumper (July 3, 1985-June 5, 1986)

Visuals: On a background of multiple stripes (from top to bottom: yellow, thin blue, black space, yellow, blue, thin white, thick red) is the large word "ALSO" in a thick red font, with the word "AVAILABLE" in an italicized, formal font, underlined in red. The white line is gapped on the right by the word "FROM", in the same font; the same space has a small black line drawn in the thick red stripe at the bottom. After a few seconds, it either quickly "page turns" to reveal the RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video logo or cuts to the RCA/Columbia Pictures logo.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: None.

Availability: Only known so far to appear on Starman, Runaway, Real Genius, The Slugger's Wife and rental copies of Ghostbusters (sale copies have no previews) from 1985 and 1986.

2nd Bumper (July 2, 1986-October 15, 1987)

Visuals:

  • 84 Charing Cross Road: Essentially just either of these bumper texts on a black background:
    • COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU
    • COMING THIS SUMMER TO A THEATER NEAR YOU
  • Quiet Cool: A black card flips in from the second RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video logo. On it is one of these bumper texts:
    • ALSO AVAILABLE FROM
    • COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU

Technique: A still graphic on 84 Charing Cross Road. 2D computer animation on Quiet Cool.

Audio: None.

Availability: Only seen on 84 Charing Cross Road and Quiet Cool.

3rd Bumper (October 5, 1989-February 14, 1990)

Visuals: On a magenta background, one of these would be on the screen:

  • COMING SOON ON VIDEOCASSETTE
  • COMING SOON TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU (here, the font is different and with shadow effects and the background is gradient.

Variants: Another version of the "COMING SOON TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU" screen has a pink gradient background and no shadow effects.

Technique: A still, computerized graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on RCA/Columbia tapes of the time, including Out of the Dark (where it debuted), Chances Are, Fright Night Part 2, 976-Evil, Lawrence of Arabia, No Holds Barred, Winter People, See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Loverboy. The pink "COMING SOON TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU" screen is seen on The Karate Kid Part III.

4th Bumper (February 15, 1990-September 15, 1993)

Visuals: On a blue gradient background, a silver filmstrip with black pictures with the yellow words "Sneak Preview", stacked on top of each other, flies in from the right. The camera then focuses on the strip as it moves until it stops, with the beginning of the trailer replacing the "Sneak Preview" pictures. The trailer then zooms in from the filmstrip, filling the whole screen.

Trivia:

  • Usually, the Sony version of the MPAA green band trailer bumper would precede this.
  • Some tapes (e.g. the first two Look Who's Talking films and Bram Stoker's Dracula, all of which use the theatrical release version of the bumper before trailers for The Freshman, Bingo and In the Line of Fire, respectively, and Masters of Menace, where the home video release version plays before a trailer for Little Vegas) have this precede only one trailer, despite the pluralization in the announcement. A few tapes have one version of the bumper precede a single trailer and the other precede the first of multiple trailers (e.g. Groundhog Day, where the "...movies coming to a theater near you" version precedes the lone theatrical trailer on the tape, that being for Mr. Jones, while the "...upcoming videocassette releases" version precedes the first home video trailer on the tape).
  • On most tapes, if one looks around the sides while the trailer plays, one can see some of the filmstrip outside.

Variants:

  • Depending on the release, the trailer will either play during the animation or won't start until it zooms in from the filmstrip.
  • On Leather Jackets, a marble background with "Please Stay Tuned For These Upcoming World Premiere Videos" over it zooms in instead.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A low synthesized note that plays for the duration of the logo. There is also a male announcer that says one of the following:

  • Theatrical releases: "And now, a special sneak preview of movies coming to a theater near you."
  • Home video releases: "And now, a sneak preview of upcoming videocassette releases."

Availability: This can be found on VHS release from RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video and Columbia TriStar Home Video, such as Bloodhounds of Broadway (where it debuted), Immediate Family, Casualties of War, Pump Up the Volume, My Girl, the first two Look Who's Talking films, One False Move, Hudson Hawk, Men at Work, Curse IV: The Ultimate Sacrifice, Arena (1989), Fast Getaway, Too Much Sun, Night of the Living Dead (1990), City of Joy, and Single White Female. It's also seen on some early releases with the third CTHV logo, including the original VHS releases of Bram Stoker's Dracula, A Few Good Men, Hexed, Sniper, Groundhog Day, and El Mariachi. Its last known appearance was on Full Contact.

5th Bumper (New Line variant, 1992-1993)

Visuals: Essentially just one of these bumper texts on a black background:

  • Coming Soon From Columbia Tri-Star Home Video
  • Now Available From Columbia Tri-Star Home Video

Variant: A variant of the "Coming Soon" bumper with a different font for the words, and with "Tri-Star" spelled as "TriStar", exists.

Technique: A still graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on some New Line Home Video releases such as Late for Dinner.

6th Bumper (Castle Rock variant, 1996-1997)

Visuals: On a black background, one of the following lines would be on the screen:

  • The Following Feature Is Coming Soon To A Theatre Near You.
  • The Following Feature Is Coming Soon To Home Video.

Variant: A variant of the "theater" line reads "The Following Features Are Coming Soon To A Theatre Near You."

Technique: A still graphic.

Audio: None.

Availability: Seen on the original VHS releases of select Castle Rock Entertainment films that were distributed by CTHV and Turner Home Entertainment in that period, such as Alaska, The American President, City Hall, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Othello, and Striptease.

Legacy/Final Note: From the VHS release of The Pickle until Sony's last VHS release, Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild, Columbia TriStar Home Video/Entertainment just used their logos for sneak preview bumpers. Descriptions of those can be found on the regular logo descriptions of Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
