Background

Taco Bell Corp. is an American multinational chain of fast food restaurants founded in 1962 by Glen Bell in Downey, California; Bell died in 2010. It is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc.

1st Tag (1988-1989)

Visuals: In a desert with a time-lapsed animation of clouds, a picture of the Taco Bell building (the design and interior of which were used from 1988 to 1994) is seen. Then two skidmarks form on the ground.

Variants:

  • A superimposed variant exists on some commercials.
  • On one commercial, the 1985 Taco Bell logo is seen over a black background.
  • Another commercial has the tagline "WHERE THE BEST FOOD MEETS AN EVEN BETTER PRICE."

Technique: A combination of live-action and cel animation.

Audio: A male chorus sings "Taco Bell has your order! Make a run for the border!" over a hard rock theme a la Van Halen (Sammy Hagar era).

Audio Variants:

  • Sometimes, the jingle is extended.
  • On one commercial, the jingle is accompanied by a horse whinny and several Hanna-Barbera sound effects (a ricochet sound, a boing and a "zing-out" whistle).

2nd Tag (1989-1993)

Visuals: At the end of the commercial, a golden bell swings to the center, taking up the whole screen. The camera zooms out to reveal that it is inside a bell tower window (a sunset of which can be seen outside), which turns into a red semicircle. As it does so, two orange lines merge together from both sides. The bell stops ringing and turns yellow with a green mouth and an orange waist. While all this happens, the words "TACO BELL" slide into place from both directions.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: The ending of the commercial, alongside the familiar Taco Bell bong; the pitch varies from commercial to commercial.

Audio Trivia: The "Taco Bell bong" has been used in Taco Bell commercials since 1989. It was created using a Yamaha DX7 synthesizer.
