Background

VTM was the very first commercial television station in Flanders (a region in Belgium), launched in 1989. The group would later go on to create Kanaal 2, Vitaya, VTM Kzoom and JIM TV following the success of this channel.

1st Logo (1989-1997)

Logo: The logo starts out in the sea. Yellow, green and red stripes appear in the water, dividing it into various pixels. Out of some green, yellow and red lights are emitted out of which the letters V, T and M are formed. Three light flashes on the side with green, yellow and red end the composition.

Variants:

  • In some variants, a singer, at the end of the song, would sing VTM, at the rhythm and moment of the three light flashes.
  • There is a closedown variant in which the stripes detach themselves from the logo, the letters put themselves back into a flat surface and reform the sea, while the camera pans up to reveal the moon.

Technique: The animation consists of superb computer graphics for the time, which still looked decent by the end of the startup's lifespan.

Music/Sounds:

  • Startup: A synthesized tune that wouldn't feel out of place in a SNES/Sega Genesis game.
  • Closedown: A trumpet theme.

Availability: Extinct.

2nd Logo (1989-1990)

Logo: On a black background, we see a crystal with the logo on it.

Variant: In some variants the logo is seen zooming in.

Technique: TBA

Music/Sounds: A calming synth theme.

Availability: Extinct.

3rd Logo (1990-1993)

Logo: On a dark blue background, we see several glass-like rectangles rotating while the logo assembles itself.

Variants:

  • There is a variant which remixes the music.
  • In another one the rectangles stand still.

Technique: TBA

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous logo.

Availability: Extinct.

4th Logo (1994-1995)

Logo: This logo has 4 variants depending on the season. The VTM logo flies around a glass cylinder in front of a sky background and an object that matches the season (flowers in spring, swimming people in summer, birds flying in autumn and snow in winter).

Technique: TBA.

Music/Sounds: A synth theme that's arranged differently depending on the variant (jazzy in spring, light in summer and somewhat melancholic in autumn and winter).

Availability: Extinct.

5th Logo (1996)

Logo: Again, depends on the variant and season:

  • Winter: People ice skating in an ice rink with the VTM logo on it.
  • Spring: TBA
  • Summer: People swimming in a VTM logo-shaped swimming pool.
  • Autumn: The wind is blowing while geese fly in the sky, and some people walk towards the VTM logo in the sky. Christmas: Same as the winter variant, but some ice skaters wear Christmas hats while snow falls from the sky.

Technique: TBA.

Music/Sounds: A three-note harp theme. The Christmas variant adds sleighbells.

Availability: Extinct.

6th Logo (1997-2000)

Logo: A woman is shown dancing in a flower field. The clouds are the shape of the logo.

Variant: In the closedown the dancing gets expanded upon with flashes of celebrities and the final line at the end "Kleur je dag" (color your day), while the clouds form the VTM logo.

Technique: TBA.

Music/Sounds:

  • In normal variants it's a three note harp theme.
  • In the closedown a longer song is used, with the following lyrics:
    • Weer een dag voorbij (Again a day goes past) Voor VTM en mij (for VTM and me.)
    • Morgen zie ik je weer (Next Morning I see you again.)
    • Ik wil meer en meer (I want more and more.)
    • Je kleurt mijn dag VTM (You color my day VTM.)

Availability: Extinct.

7th Logo (2000-2004)

Logo: We see a moving image, that transitions to the VTM logo in a different scenery after a while.

Technique: TBA.

Music/Sounds: A short piano tune.
