Background

Verizon is an American wireless network operator that was founded in April 4, 2000, after Bell Atlantic, who had acquired GTE Corporation, established a joint venture with British company Vodafone to further expand its network business. Bell Atlantic would soon rename to Verizon Communications in June 2000. The name is a portmanteau of veritas (Latin for "truth") and horizon. The carrier currently operates 5G and 4G LTE networks, and was reported to have more than 143 million subscribers in its network by 2023, becoming the country's second-largest wireless carrier.

1st Screen (2004-2006)

Visuals:

  • Startup: Various scenes crossfade into eachother, before fading out to a black background with the "Verizon Wireless" text, and a red checkmark draws itself on top of the text.
  • Shutdown: Same as the startup, but shorter, and it uses a different scene.

Variant: On some phones, the background is white instead of black.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio:

  • Startup: An 8-note electric guitar theme, with strong harmonics and an echoing effect.
  • Shutdown: A 4-note acoustic guitar theme with harmonics.

Availability: Seen mostly on Verizon-branded LG phones, such as the LG VX6100, LG VX5200, and LG VX5300.

2nd Screen (2004-2006)

Visuals:

  • Startup: On a black background, red streaks appear from the top left corner, and the top right corner. The "Verizon Wireless" text fades in, and a red checkmark draws itself on top of the text.
  • Shutdown: The Verizon Wireless logo fades out while red streaks appear from the top left corner.

Variants:

  • The background is white on some phones.
  • On some Samsung phones, the Samsung logo may appear at the end.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: Same as before, or in some cases, the manufacturer's startup and shutdown sounds, or none.

Audio Variant: A MIDI rendition of the Verizon startup and shutdown sounds, used on LG VX4650 and VX4700.

Availability: Seen on Verizon-branded devices from the period.
