Background
WCVB-TV, virtual channel 5 (UHF digital channel 33), is an ABC-affiliated television station licensed to Boston, Massachusetts, United States. The station is owned by the Hearst Television subsidiary of New York City-based Hearst Communications.
1st ID (1972)
Visuals: On a black background, we see a circular arrow resembling a stylized number 5 (the channel's number, circled by the rainbow-colored words "WCVB-TV" above and "BOSTON" below. It then fades into several of these "5"s in different colors bunched up together. A montage showing WCVB workers than plays out.
Technique: Crossfading.
Audio: An announcer says "This is WCVB-TV, the new channel 5!", followed by funk music.
Availability: Used as a sign-on ident around the time.
2nd ID (1976-1977)
Visuals: ABC's "Let Us Be the One!" ID. There's a byline with "WCVB-tv" on the left, the station's logo in the middle, and "Boston" on the right.
Technique: See ABC.
Audio: Unknown
3rd ID (1979-1980)
4th ID (1981-198?)
Visuals: On a space background, we see "WCVB 5" (with "5" being the station's stylized 5 logo) with blue beams coming from it above. Below is the small text "BOSTON" right-aligned.
Technique: None.
Audio: Just an announcer.
Availability: It was used as a sign-on/sign-off ID.
5th ID (1995-1999)
Visuals: We see the generic Hearst Television ID template with the WCVB "5" logo attached on a red plate.
Technique: CGI by LoConte-Goldman Design in Boston, MA.
Audio: A short brass-based fanfare from the "Image News" music package. Composed by Gari Communications (now known as Gari Media Group) and was originally commissioned by Hearst as part of the aforementioned mandate.
- This is often accompanied by an announcer.
Availability: These usually appeared at the beginning of news intros during this period, and were sometimes used as standalone IDs.
