North American Bumpers

(1998-March 21, 2006)

Logo: On a black background with stars, we see DreamWorks' "Moon Boy" symbol either on the top-right or top-left. In the center is text announcing the previews. The text is in all caps depending on the variant. A list of variants includes:

  • Coming to Theaters
  • Coming to Theaters Next Year
  • Coming to Movie Theaters in the Year 2000
  • Coming Soon to Video
  • Now Available on Videocassette
  • Available Exclusively on Video and DVD
  • On Video and DVD
  • Now on Video

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Seen during the opening previews of DreamWorks videotapes and DVDs. The "Year 2000" variant can be found on The Prince of Egypt, the "Next Year" variant can be found on Shrek, and the "DreamWorks Animation" variation can be found on the DVD of Shrek 2. The last appearance of the bumpers appear on the 2006 VHS of Dreamer.

International Bumpers

United Kingdom

1st Bumper (1998-1999)

Same as the CIC Video bumpers at the time.

2nd Bumper (2002-2006)

Logo: On a space background, we see a flash appearing in the center. As it brightens, it reveals one of the following clip-ons:

  • COMING SOON TO CINEMAS
  • IN CINEMAS NOW
  • RENT IT NOW ON VIDEO AND DVD
  • OWN IT NOW ON VIDEO AND DVD
  • COMING SOON TO RENT ON VIDEO AND DVD
  • COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD

Variants:

  • In the "RENT IT NOW ON VIDEO AND DVD" and "OWN IT NOW ON VIDEO AND DVD" variants, the clip-ons are already on-screen, and light rays shine on them from the bottom, again on the top, and around them.
  • In the "COMING SOON TO RENT ON VIDEO AND DVD" and "COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD" variants, the background slowly zooms in, only "COMING SOON" appears in the flash, before quickly zooming in, leaving the rest of the text to fade in from behind it, before it zooms in extremely fast.

FX/SFX: Depends on the variant.

Music/Sounds: Depends on the variant:

  • In the "COMING SOON TO CINEMAS" and "IN CINEMAS NOW" variants, a very low synth fanfare for the flash, then a whoosh sound, followed by another slightly fast paced low synth fanfare before another whoosh sound occurs.
  • In the "RENT IT NOW ON VIDEO AND DVD" and "OWN IT NOW ON VIDEO AND DVD" variants, a drum hit, followed by a low fanfare with a shining sound.
  • In the "COMING SOON TO RENT ON VIDEO AND DVD" and "COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD" variants, an eerie muffled explosion from the flash with a few whooshes, then a louder one when "COMING SOON" zooms in, a low pulsing hum when the rest of the text appears, then the same whoosh when it zooms in.

Availability: Very common. Seen on many UK VHS releases from Universal and DreamWorks Home Entertainment from the time, including The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, Shrek 2, The Tuxedo, Johnny English, Shark Tale, 8 Mile, and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, among many others.

Germany

(1998)

Logo: Same as the domestic bumper, but the text is replaced by one of the following clip-ons:

  • DEMNÄCHST IN KINO ("COMING SOON TO CINEMAS" in German)
  • JETZT IM KINO ("NOW IN CINEMAS")

Variant: A variant of the "JETZT IN KINO" variant exists that shows the text in a black background.

FX/SFX: Same as the domestic bumper.

Music/Sounds: Same as the domestic bumper.

Availability: This was found on a German VHS of Deep Impact.

Logo: On a black background, we see the words "Breve em" ("Soon on" in Portuguese) with the VHS and DVD logos in gold below.

Variant: A variant replaces the first words with "Em breve".

FX/SFX: None.

Availability: Uncommon. Can be found on Brazilian Universal tapes, such as Barbie of Swan Lake (Barbie - O Lago dos Cisnes).

  • PROXIMAMENTE EN CINE ("COMING SOON TO CINEMAS" in Spanish)

Availability: Uncommon. Found on Mexican VHS releases at the time, such as Chicken Run (Pollitos en fuga).

Logo: We see a flash that dims to reveal a blurry DreamWorks logo animating on the background, as a filmstrip with clips of the logo appears, followed by one of the following clip-ons flipping in:

  • Próximamente a la venta en video y DVD ("Coming soon on sale in video and DVD")
  • A la venta en video y DVD ("On sale in video and DVD")
  • a la venta en video ("on sale in video")
  • próximamente en cines ("coming soon on cinemas")
  • en cines ("on cinemas")

The screen then flashes again, leaving a black background.

FX/SFX: Everything.

Music/Sounds: An energetic synth theme accompanied by whooshes and one of the following announcer spiels:

  • "Próximamente a la venta en video y DVD" ("Coming soon on sale in video and DVD.")

Logo: On a blue background with a DreamWorks logo wallpaper, we see "IN VENDITA IN VIDEOCASSETTA DA [MONTH/YEAR]" ("FOR SALE ON VIDEOCASSETTE IN [MONTH/YEAR]" in Italian).

Variant: In early releases, the background is black-blue gradient, the font is different, and there's a DreamWorks logo in the upper left corner.

FX/SFX: None or the ID sliding to the right for the start of any given trailer.
