In 2011, GKIDS took over the North American theatrical distribution rights to the Studio Ghibli library from the Walt Disney Studios, followed by video rights in 2015, taking over from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. On October 15, 2024, Toho announced that it would buy the distributor and become a subsidiary of Toho International.
