Background

GKIDS, LLC (an abbreviation of Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate) is a New York-based independent film and television distributor founded in 2008 by Erick Beckman that focuses on "sophisticated, indie" animated movies as well as television series. In 2011, GKIDS took over the North American theatrical distribution rights to the Studio Ghibli library from the Walt Disney Studios, followed by video rights in 2015, taking over from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. On October 15, 2024, Toho announced that it would buy the distributor and become a subsidiary of Toho International.
