Background

Harkins Theatres is an American movie theater chain with locations throughout the Southwestern United States. Harkins Theatres is privately owned and operated by its parent company, Harkins Enterprises, LLC. The company currently operates 31 theaters with 487 screens throughout Arizona, California, Colorado, and Oklahoma. According to Box-office Pro, among the "Giants of Exhibition" it is the 7th largest movie theatre circuit in North America.

1st Logo (1995-1998)

Visuals: The screen fades into various patrons outside a Harkins Theatre, most of whom are looking at the movie posters along the wall. The "Harkins" text in red slides up the screen as we fade to the projection booth and we see a boy holding some film as his father loads the projector. The screen fades to two moviegoers discussing one's most recent love interest as a women in front of them appears. The screen cuts to the concession stand, where one customer reminds another that smoking is not permitted inside the theatre. The man then begins keeping tally of how many popcorn kernels are in his bag. We switch focus to the customers in line behind them, where the man insists on his date purchasing concessions as payback for a quip at his expense. The screen cuts to two kids entering the auditorium where one of them notices a wrapper on the floor and goes to dispose of it. The screen cuts to a group of patrons who are informed that they must turn off their various mobile devices. The screen cuts to another pair of patrons finding their seats, and quickly pan to a pair in front who noticed them. The screen cuts again to casual conversation between two more moviegoers in the front row, and fade back to the projectionist and his son followed by a close-up of the projector and back to the audience. The screen cuts between various shots of the moviegoers ending with the popcorn counter resuming his tally. The screen fades out and the Harkins Theatres and NBC News 12 logos appear, with a list of the featured news anchors underneath.

Technique: Live-action: This logo was produced entirely using live-action footage.

Audio: Various musical tracks with change alongside the mood of the present scene, mostly flipping between a string fanfare and a jazz tune.

2nd Logo (1998-2000)

Visuals: The sequence opens on a grassy field dotted with mountains, which quickly dissolves into a rotating film reel. A series a blue and purple lights shoot out of the reel as it turns on its side. The "Harkins" text slides across the side of the reel against a series of neon lights. The reel turns upright once again, and a yellow light flashes over the "Harkins Theaters" text superimposed on top of the reel. Another light writes in the text "Feature Presentation" as the reel completes its rotation. The light dissipates and the logo holds (with the film reel still spinning) for a few seconds before the ident fades out.

Technique: CGI

Audio: A majestic string and keyboard fanfare, with percussion and twinkling sounds near the end.

3rd Logo (2000-2013?)

Visuals: Against a blue curtain background, a spotlight shines across various parts of a gold Harkins Theatres logo until a blue-violet light wipes in the logo alongside the grey text "Feature Presentation" underneath. The logo zooms out as two more spotlights slide across the logo, then the ident fades out.

Technique: CGI

Audio: A triumphant orchestral fanfare.
