Background
According to Dave Sieg, in 1974, Computer Image Corporation decided to find a larger market to open a facility in Hollywood, California. It borrows heavily from Computer Image Corporation to open Image West. The company, while technically doing well, had failed to know the Hollywood market well, and was foreclosed by the bank eventually. The bank then approached the Canadian Omnibus Inc., Computer Image Corporation's largest customer, to offer to take over Image West. Omnibus then agreed and operated them until 1982, when it sold Image West and formed Omnibus Computer Graphics using digital technology licensed from the New York Institute of Technology. The company continued to operate Scanimates until Image West discontinued operations in 1986.[1]
1st Logo (1978)
Visuals: Two red semi-circles slide in from the edges of the screen, forming a circle. Then two semi-circles deform as it zooms out. Then another semi-circle from the left spins clockwise. Two red inverted quadrants and a semi-circle spin in sync with the music. The circles form an abstract road. Then the "IMAGE WEST" in a Pump typeface flies in from the top and moves to the top right of an abstract road.
Technique: Scanimate effects.
Audio: A funky disco tune. It was also used at the beginning of the demo reel as a soundtrack.
Availability: It can be seen at the end of the 1978 demo reel.
2nd Logo (1979)
Visuals: Golden textured "IMAGE WEST" in the same typeface as before slides in from the edges of the screen. Once the words are positioned to the center, it zooms in, while glowing in dark pink. The letter "I" sparkles. Then the "IMAGE WEST" flies away from the screen.
Technique: Scanimate effects.
Audio: The opening and closing soundtrack of the demo reel.
Availability: It can be seen on a 1979 Image West Demo Reel #15B.
3rd Logo (1980)
-
Opening logo sequence.
-
Closing logo sequence.
Visuals: Blue starfields spin in a kaleidoscope effect as it zooms out. The starfields then zoom in. Then the glowing yellow "IMAGE WEST" in the Avant Garde typeface zooms in while the shine draws in. The starfields zoom out again, and the "IMAGE WEST" shines.
Variant: The closing variant has a starfield in orange. Instead of zooming back in, it maintains the distance. Then the "IMAGE WEST" appears in sync with the last three notes. The "IMAGE WEST" shines.
Technique: Scanimate effects.
Audio: The opening and closing soundtrack of the demo reel.
Availability: Spotted on a 1980 Image West Demo Reel #18.
4th Logo (1981)
-
Gold-red variant
Visuals: The Image West logo, which consists of a blue-yellow stylized handwriting chrome "image west" on a blue circle with two lines sandwiching "image west" with "ELECTRONIC" and "ANIMATION" engraved on the lines, zooms in while it shines. Then the letters "i", "a", "t", and "w" sparkle.
Variants:
- A gold-red variant can be seen after the Super Bowl XV segment. The "image west" draws in. The logo shines differently, while the "ELECTRONIC" gains its glow. Then the diagonal grid draws in, transitioning to a Northwestern Bell commercial.
- This was also seen again, but the zooming is removed. Then the World Championship Tennis animation sequence pixels in and the circle mask zooms in.
- The closing variant in which the logo sparkles more, appears after the Bridgestone commercial.
Technique: Scanimate effects.
Audio: The soundtrack from the demo reel. The soundtrack is actually "Electro Phantasma" (from The Electric Horseman soundtrack) by Dave Grusin, which was also used for the KTCA sign-off bumper and the 1970 KENS news intro.
Audio Variant: The gold-red and the closing variant used the synthpop track "Rydeen" by Yellow Magic Orchestra instead.
Availability: Spotted on a 1981 Image West Demo Reel #19B.
5th Logo (1982)
This logo is currently missing in action. Please do not add reconstructions of the logo if any exist, as they are likely not accurate to the actual logo. Additionally, do not attempt to add a finalized description of the logo until it has been found in its entirety. |
Visuals: Over a background of a road in a desert on a cloudy day, a glossy cube rotates. The "IMAGE WEST" is shown atop the rotating cube.
Variant: For the closing variant, a tile of clouds are shown. Over the tile is the "Image West" in a stylized handwriting font.
Technique: Analog scanimate effects likely done with VersEFX.
Audio: Unknown.
Availability: The only place to find this logo is from a 1982 Image West Demo Reel #20, available on a Scanimate DVD.
