Background

According to Dave Sieg, in 1974, Computer Image Corporation decided to find a larger market to open a facility in Hollywood, California. It borrows heavily from Computer Image Corporation to open Image West. The company, while technically doing well, had failed to know the Hollywood market well, and was foreclosed by the bank eventually. The bank then approached the Canadian Omnibus Inc., Computer Image Corporation's largest customer, to offer them to take over Image West. Omnibus then agreed and operated them until 1982, when it sold Image West and formed Omnibus Computer Graphics using digital technology licensed from the New York Institute of Technology. The company continued to operate Scanimates until Image West discontinued operations in 1986.[1]

1st Logo (1978)

Visuals: Two red semi-circles slide in from the edges of the screen, forming a circle. Then two semi-circles deform as it zooms out. Then another semi-circle from the left spins clockwise. Two red inverted quadrants and a semi-circle spin in sync with the music. The circles form an abstract road. Then the "IMAGE WEST" in a Pump typeface flies in from the top and moves to the top right of an abstract road.

Technique: Scanimate effects.

Audio: A funky disco tune. It was also used at the beginning of the demo reel.

Availability: It can be seen at the end of the 1978 demo reel.

2nd Logo (1979)

Visuals: Golden textured "IMAGE WEST" in the same typeface as before slides in from the edges of the screen. Once the words are positioned to the center, it zooms in, while glowing in dark pink. The letter "I" sparkles. Then the "IMAGE WEST" flies away from the screen.

Technique: Scanimate effects.

Audio: The opening and closing soundtrack of the demo reel.

Availability: It can be seen on a 1979 Image West Demo Reel 15B.

3rd Logo (1980)

Visuals:

  • Opening: Blue starfields spin in a kaleidoscope effect as it zooms out. The starfields then zoom in. Then the glowing yellow "IMAGE WEST" in the Avant Garde typeface zooms in while the shine draws in. The starfields zoom out again, and the "IMAGE WEST" shines.
  • Closing: Same as the opening logo, but the starfield is orange. Instead of zooming back in, it maintains the distance. Then the "IMAGE WEST" appears in sync with the last three notes of the soundtrack from the demo reel. The "IMAGE WEST" shines.

Technique: Scanimate effects.

Audio: The opening and closing soundtrack of the demo reel.

Availability: Spotted on a 1980 Image West Demo Reel 18.
