Background

Millar Gough Ink is an American television and film production company founded in 1997 by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough.

1st Logo (October 12th, 1999-November 10th, 2011)

Logo: In the office, we see a bottle filled with orange red ink in it labeled the stacked gold-white gradient words reading:

MILLAR
GOUGH
INK

at the forefront. After one of the music variants are played, a hammer (which, if you look very, very closely, you can see a hammer falling down, as seen in the reflection on the bottle) falls down on top of it and breaks it, causing the ink in it to splash everywhere, covering up the whole screen.

Variant: There exists an open-matte version of the logo.

FX/SFX: Entirely live-action. The live-action logo was made by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

Music/Sounds: There are the music variants:

  • October 12th, 1999-July 7th, 2000: On The Strip, The closing theme of the show is played before the splattering sound.
  • October 16th, 2001-February 12th, 2002: Just the sound of a bottle breaking.
  • February 26th, 2002-May 21st, 2002: An odd, 3-note piano tune, accompanied by an eerie, distorted chorus.
  • September 24th, 2002-November 10th, 2011: An 13-note cathedral organ ditty, accompanied by an 7-note instrumental tune, followed by a last note.

Both music variants ended with the splattering sound or the sound of a bottle breaking. Sometimes, the sounds at the end of this logo is even louder.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the episodes "X-Ray" and "Hug" of the 1st season of Smallville, the bottle breaking sound is omitted.
  • On the early episodes of the 2nd season of Smallville, the cathedral organ ditty is somewhat slightly quieter before the bottle breaking sound appears.
  • Original airings use a generic theme and a voice over.
  • On the episode "Arrival" of the 5th season of Smallville, the last note and the bottle breaking sounds are synced for several reasons.

It may have also appeared on Channel 4 and E4 UK airings or 2003 DVD releases of season 1 of Smallville. This also appeared on Blu-ray prints of Smallville.
