Background

Nokia Corporation (natively Nokia Oyj, referred to as Nokia; stylized as NOKIA) is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, information technology, and consumer electronics corporation, established in 1865. Nokia's main headquarters are in Espoo, Finland, in the greater Helsinki metropolitan area, but the company's actual roots are in the Tampere region of Pirkanmaa. In 2020, Nokia employed approximately 92,000 people across over 100 countries, did business in more than 130 countries, and reported annual revenues of around €23 billion. Nokia is a public limited company listed on the Helsinki Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange. It is the world's 415th-largest company measured by 2016 revenues according to the Fortune Global 500, having peaked at 85th place in 2009. It is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index.

1st Logo (1998-2006)

Logo: On a gradient background (a blue-white gradient on color phones), we see two hands, an adult's on the left and a child's on the right, reaching out. "NOKIA" in the Eurostile Squared font (and in dark blue on color phones) is seen below.

Technique: Static image.

Music/Sounds:

• Theme composed by Ian Livingstone, inspired by the last 5-notes of the "Nokia Tune" ringtone, which is an excerpt of Gran Vals by Francisco Tárrega. Depending on the phone's capabilities, the audio is either in AMR or MIDI format.
• On all phones before the Nokia 6310 and certain devices such as Nokia 1100, 2100 and 2300, the boot screen is silent.

Availability: Can be seen on early Nokia models, such as the Nokia 3310 and the Nokia 6110.

2nd Logo (2000-2012)

Logo: The same concept as the previous bootscreen, now put into motion. The hands from before appear with the Nokia logo below and proceed to meet in a hand-holding/shake gesture.

Technique: CGI (pixel animation on older devices). Sequence of images instead of animation in certain Nokia phones made for Asia.

Music/Sounds: Same as before. The jingle would slightly vary between models depending on the phone's audio capabilities. No sound in the Nokia 3610.

Availability: Seen on almost all Nokia models, starting from the Nokia 3610 from 2000 until the Nokia 2135.

3rd Logo (2002-2012)

Logo: A redone live-action version of the previous bootscreen. The hands are seen from a wider angle on wider-screened devices and emerge from either side of the screen rather than already starting in the frame. Additionally, the Nokia logo is smaller and doesn't fade in until the hands meet.

Variant:

• At the end of a promotional video, the slogan "CONNECTING PEOPLE" would be under "NOKIA". The animation is also smoother and fades to white.
• On the N900, the fade in on the Nokia logo is much quicker and the screen would fade out black afterwards.
• the Nokia logo is larger, and is seen before the hands meet, in Series 40 devices.

Technique: Live-action.

Music/Sounds: Same as before.

Music/Sounds Variants:

• Some models between 2007 and 2011 add a shimmering sound near the end of the jingle.
• A guitar version of the jingle was used on some later models such as the N97 and 6700.
• A unique piano based version composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto was used on the 8800.
• A unique guitar version composed by Brian Eno was used on the 8800 Sirocco.
• The last Symbian phones and all Nokia feature phones used a marimba-based version of the jingle since 2011. This would continue to be used with the new bootscreen introduced in 2013.

Availability: Seen on Nokia phones at the time.

4th Logo (2011-)

Logo: Two ripples appear at either side of the screen which meet together and after that a third ripple appears in the center with the Nokia logo bouncing.

Later Variant: Starting in 2013, it's just the Nokia logo appearing in white on a black screen.

Technique: CGI. For the later variant, none.

Music/Sounds: The Marimba version of the guitar jingle.

Music/Sounds Variants:

• The Nokia phones released between 2011 and 2014 had used the marimba version with the last note note more pronounced.
• The Asha 500 and the first Lumia phones used a pitched-up mbira version.
• The Series 30+ phones, starting from the 108, use a MIDI version of the jingle above.
• The Nokia devices from 2017 use an accompaniment with the marimba jingle.
• The Nokia devices from 2018 to date use a slowed down version of the 2013 jingle.

Availability: Seen on Nokia feature phones starting in 2013 and on Nokia smartphones starting in 2011.
