Philistine Films

Background

Philistine Films is an independent film production company established in 1997 and based in both Palestine and Jordan. It was founded by Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir. The company's primary focus lies in the development and co-production of independent feature and documentary films, aiming to discover unconventional stories and fresh narratives. By doing so, they hope to address the creative, financial, and practical challenges faced by filmmakers operating outside the mainstream.

Philistine Films has gained recognition for its interest in thought-provoking and original movies, showcasing filmmakers with distinctive visions. It has earned a reputable position in the region's independent cinema, producing films for both large and small screens. Their films have been selected for prestigious film festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto, and Tribeca, receiving various accolades and awards.

Furthermore, Philistine Films emphasizes education and training, believing in the importance of a self-sufficient industry with professional crew and independent voices to foster truly independent cinema. To achieve this, they have organized diverse workshops on screenwriting and directing, technical crew training, and established a cinema club. Additionally, they have successfully curated film festivals and screenings, most notably the Dreams of a Nation traveling film festival and database. In 2011, Philistine Films proudly hosted internationally acclaimed director Ken Loach for his historic visit to Ramallah.
