Background

Platinum Dunes is a production company founded in 2001 by director Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Bradley Fuller. Platinum Dunes specializes in horror film remakes, as well as sequels to remakes and original projects. Although very successful, they are quite notable for having pretty much all of their films produced get a rotten rating on film review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being formed in 2001, this company didn't use a logo until 2003.

1st Logo (October 17, 2003-March 6, 2009)

Nickname: "The Desert"

Logo: On a black background, we see several platinum lines zooming out and overlapping each other. After a few seconds, the lines fill in with color and reveal themselves to be a drawing of dunes in a desert. As a sky fades in over the dunes, "PLATINUM DUNES", in a silver font, zooms in underneath the picture (compressed in a box) and shines.

Variant: Starting in 2006, the logo freezes after the dunes are formed.

FX/SFX: Decent CGI animation of the dunes.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the movie.

Availability: Common. It can be found on any movie such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake), The Amityville Horror (2005 remake), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and The Hitcher (2007 remake). The last movie to use this logo was Horsemen.

Editor's Note: None.

2nd Logo (January 9, 2009-)

Nickname: "Over the Desert"

Logo: We see live-action footage of a camera moving across some dunes. As the picture begins to compress into a box, the words "PLATINUM DUNES" appear from behind the dunes and the action freezes.

Variants:

  • On Friday the 13th (2009), the logo (except the company name) is tinted red.
  • On The Last Ship, the logo is shortened
  • At the end of Ouija (and its sequel)and on Black Sails, the logo is still.

FX/SFX: Mostly live action.

Music/Sounds: Same as the previous logo.

Availability: Common. Appears on The Unborn (where it debuted), The Purge films, Friday the 13th (2009 remake), A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010 remake), the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, and A Quiet Place. Also appears on the series Black Sails, The Last Ship, and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.

Editor's Note: None.
