Revision as of 22:21, 1 November 2024

1st Screen (March 4, 2000-2013)

Visuals: On a black background, red clouds of mist spiral around a moving red light. A glass cube zooms into view and starts to revolve around the light as a message appears saying "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc." Another glass cube comes into view further away from the camera and behind the text, and also revolves around the light.

Variants:

  • The message is displayed in a different language depending on what language your PlayStation 2 is set to, e.g. "Por favor, inserte un disco de formato PlayStation o PlayStation 2." in Spanish.
  • An earlier variant of this screen appears on SCPH-1xxxx models, which has different centering for both lines and has different wording for the error message.
  • On SCPH-xx005/06/07/08 models, the "PlayStation" and "PlayStation 2" texts are written in the same font as the rest of the message rather than as their respective logos.
  • On SCPH-50009 models, the whole text is written in a Times New Roman-like serif font.

Technique: CGI running at 60fps.

Audio: A tense synth jingle with a breathy humming sound. The remainder of the screen is silent, save for the sounds of waves flowing.

Availability: It only appears when an unreadable disc (or a disc that is not a PS, PS2, DVD, or Audio CD disc) is inserted into a PlayStation 2.

Legacy: This screen, nicknamed the "Red Screen of Death", is known to catch many off-guard thanks to the long silence, the dark background, and the clouds.

2nd Screen (Browser Errors) (March 4, 2000-2013)

Visuals: On the system's browser page (or on a black screen), the background fades to a darker colour and a message appears. The contents of the message depend on the error, and the user will usually be given the option to exit from the message by pressing the Circle button.

Variants:

  • DVD Player is not set up.
This is more commonly seen on earlier PlayStation 2 models, and appears if the user tries to play a DVD on the system without first setting up the DVD Player application.
  • Disc read error. / The disc could not be read.
This is usually seen when a badly scratched or otherwise damaged valid disc is inserted into the console. The wording differs depending on if the console is a 'Fat' model or a 'Slim' model.
  • Play halted due to malfunction. / This disc cannot be played.
This is seen when an invalid or damaged DVD is inserted into the console. The wording differs depending on if the console is a 'Fat' model or a 'Slim' model.

Technique: A 2D rendered image.

Audio: None.

Availability: These errors can be seen on any PlayStation 2 console, but the specific wording will depend on the console's revision.
