Background

Plaza & Janés is a Spanish publishing company. It was founded in 1959 after the merge of Germán Plaza and the editor Josep Janés i Olivé. The company expanded rapidly and by the 1970s, it had an important presence in the Spanish and Latin American publishing market. In 1984, the German communications group Bertelsmann acquired the company and in 2001 when Bertelsmann formed a joint venture with the Italian publisher Mondadori, it would become part of Random House Mondadori. Subsequently, in 2012, the Bertelsmann Group bought Mondadori's participation in the joint venture and later, in 2013, it merged with the British company Penguin, thus making it become part of Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial.
