Background

Angel Studios was a California-based game developer. They completed their first game in 1996. Take-Two Interactive Software acquired the studio in 2002 and merged it into the Rockstar family under the San Diego banner, forming "Rockstar San Diego".

Angel Studios

1st Logo (September 30, 1996)

Logo: A lens flare is seen shining with the company name swinging in. The lens flare reveals an angel drawing in gray and blurred. "Interactive Entertainment" then fades in below.

Technique: The lens flare.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Only appeared on Mr. Bones for Sega Saturn.

2nd Logo (April 30, 1999)

NOTE: The logo starts at 0:14.

Logo: A purple spark is seen flying around as the name swings in. The angel, this time not blurred and the shadows purple, fades in as the spark reaches its hand. The same text "Interactive Entertainment" from before, but in a different font, wipes in from left to right.

Technique: The purple spark, the name swinging in.

Music/Sounds: Short humming and a xylophone-like note.

Availability: Appeared on Midtown Madness.

Legacy: It's a dreamy logo.

3rd Logo (September 21, 2000-August 21, 2001)

Logo: There is a halo coming down from a bright light from above as many flares rise up. The flares go through the halo, causing a pulse with many more flares. The pulse expands to the edges of the screen and the halo drops little white drops and zooms out as a blue, lined, rounded box with the company name inside it. The box shines.

Technique: The flares and the pulse.

Music/Sounds: A humming chorus, followed by a splash sound and a female announcer saying the company's name.

Availability: Appeared on the PlayStation 2 version of Test Drive Off-Road: Wide Open, Midtown Madness 2, Smuggler's Run and Midnight Club: Street Racing.

4th Logo (October 29, 2001-March 18, 2003)

Logo: Multiple outlines of the rounded box from before zoom out as the name is drawn in. The lines inside the box are wiped in as the halo outline zooms out multiple times and then the logo turns full color. The slogan "PURE FUN" and the URL are wiped in.

Technique: The formation of the logo.

Music/Sounds: Sounds of a laser gun, followed by the same female announcer saying the name.

Availability: Was seen on Smuggler's Run: Warzones for GameCube, Smuggler's Run 2: Hostile Territory, the Xbox release of Test Drive Off-Road: Wide Open, and Transworld Surf.

Rockstar San Diego

(April 9, 2003-May 21, 2010)

Logo: The usual Rockstar shield, but colored purple.

Variants:

  • Midnight Club II: We see a waving water surface in place of the shield. Then, the "R" shape fades in with the star turning white in a flash, while the water surface fades out. "SAN DIEGO" fades in below.
  • Midnight Club III: The shield is formed by carwheel footprints. When it fully forms, a copyright symbol and "ROCKSTAR SAN DIEGO" in a new-age font appear below.
  • Midnight Club: Los Angeles: The shield fades in moving from left to right choppily, while shadow copies of it move at a faster rate. On the PSP version, the animation plays at a faster rate.
  • Red Dead Redemption: A spinning coil of a bar machine appears and presents the Rockstar San Diego logo (spinning in slower than the preceding Rockstar Games logo). The logo is shot and vanished in a small cloud of smoke.

Technique: Depends on the game.

Music/Sounds: Depends on the game.

Availability: Appears with other Rockstar subdivisions on said games.
