The couple were breeders of St. Bernard dogs, and the company name was taken from a kennel called '''Sanctuary Woods''', located in Oregon. The company was initially headquartered in Kanata, Ontario, before moving to Victoria, British Columbia; they later opened an American division in 1993, located in San Mateo, California and operated by Scott A. Walchek. Despite initially starting strong and acquiring a number of companies, Sanctuary Woods faced losses later on. Background
Sanctuary Woods Multimedia was a Canadian-American software company, founded in 1988 by Toni and Brian J. Beninger. The couple were breeders of St. Bernard dogs, and the company name was taken from a kennel called Sanctuary Woods, located in Oregon. In May 1996, the Victoria studio was sold to Disney Interactive, and continued to operate until 2003. The American division continued to operate until filing for bankruptcy on July 6, 1999.
1st Logo (1993-1994)
Visuals: On a black background, a slightly rotated purple square flips in. Then some lasers carve a lowercase "i" onto the square, as a purple "i" falls down. The text "S A N C T U A R Y W O O D S" flips in under it. A slightly rotated purple rectangle with "ENTERTAINMENT" on it then slams into the square and becomes part of the logo.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: Mechanical sounds.
Availability: It was spotted on The Journeyman Project Turbo! for the PC, and may appear on other computer games from 1993-1994.
2nd Logo (June 30, 1995-1996)
Visuals: There is a turquoise square with three different drawings of a cursor above a streak, resembling some trees. Under it is the text "SANCTUARY WOODS", with "SANCTUARY" stacked on top of "WOODS". All of this is on a black background.
Variant: Sometimes, the square is blue.
Technique: A still graphic.
Audio: A calm synth theme or silence.
Availability: Seen on PC games released by the company from 1995-1996, such as The Journeyman Project 2: Buried In Time.
