Background

Sanrio founded their film division in 1977 to produce films; in 1985 Sanrio switched gears and started doing short films, OVAs and TV shows based on their characters.

1st Logo (1977-1981)

Logo: The Sanrio insignia (a stylized heart shaped like a flower) and the words "SANRIO FILM" are sparkling blue on a black background.

FX/SFX: The sparkling trail over the text.

Music/Sounds: Silent.

Availability: Extremely rare, as it's usually updated with the 2nd logo. Remains intact on the original Japanese version of Nutcracker Fantasy (1979).

Legacy: It may startle you a bit the first time you see it, but it's harmless.

2nd Logo (March 14, 1981-October 19, 1985)

Logo: The Sanrio insignia draws itself on a dark background and zooms out, along with the words "A SANRIO FILM". As it finishes zooming out, half of the background glows blue, and green light streaks fly out from there.

Variant: There is also a sped up version.

FX/SFX: The insignia drawing itself at the start, the words zooming out, and the flying streaks of light. All pretty cool 80s animation.

Music/Sounds: A somber string and horn tune, ending with a majestic flourish.

Music/Sounds variants:

  • Sometimes, a majestic fanfare was used.
  • The sped up variant had only the second part of the tune.
  • The short Kitty and Mimi's new Umbrella had a musical-box theme.

Availability: Seen on films at the time, including newer prints of the ones before it.

Legacy: The music and animation might get to some, but this is a very good logo.
