Background
Satin City is a production company founded in 1991 by Linwood Boomer. It is best-known for producing Malcolm in the Middle as well as the failed American adaptation of Red Dwarf. The company did not have an official logo until 2000, with Red Dwarf USA only using in-credit text.
Logo (January 9, 2000-May 14, 2006)
Visuals: On a teal gradient background, the script word "Satin" is drawn in, flashing several times, along with its transparent turquoise copy, and appearing very out-of-focus. The spaced-out text "CITY" in a white color appears below letter-by-letter, and also flashes and re-draws several times. In the background, some teal tubes (intended to be buildings) with purple tips are drawn in.
Trivia: This logo was created 3 months after the original record date of the show's pilot.
Variants:
- A warp-speed version of the logo exists on certain season 1 episodes.
- Sometimes, the logo is brighter.
Technique: 2D computer animation.
Audio: Two bass notes, then a single electric piano note rising in pitch. This was composed by Angie Rubin.
Audio Variants:
- On the pilot episode, it is almost completely silent (except for the Netflix prints); we can hear a bang at the beginning, which came from the end of the show.
- On the warp-speed version and sometimes the normal version, it has a strange-sounding synth chord playing instead, which actually came from one of the show's music cues. This cue can be heard in the episode "Red Dress" in the scene where Lois pulls the titular dress out of the toilet.
Availability: Seen on every episode of Malcolm in the Middle.
