Background

Satin City is a production company founded in 1991 by Linwood Boomer. It is best-known for producing Malcolm in the Middle as well as the failed American adaptation of Red Dwarf. The company did not have an official logo until 2000, with Red Dwarf USA only using in-credit text.

1st Logo (January 9, 2000-May 14, 2006)

Nicknames: "The Tubes", "Satin Skyscrapers"

Logo: On a teal gradient background, the script word "Satin" is drawn in, flashing several times and appearing very out-of-focus. The text "CITY" in a white color appears below letter-by-letter, and also flashes and re-draws several times. In the background, some teal tubes (intended to be buildings) with purple tips are drawn in.

Trivia: This logo was created 3 months after the original record date of the show's pilot.

Variants:

  • A warp-speed version of the logo exists on certain season 1 episodes.
  • Sometimes, the logo is brighter.

FX/SFX: The text appearing and tubes being drawn in.

Music/Sounds: Two bass notes, then a single electric piano note rising in pitch.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • On the pilot episode, it was completely silent (sans the Netflix prints), although we can hear a bang at the beginning, which came from the end of the show.
  • On the warp-speed variant and sometimes the normal variant, it has a strange-sounding synth chord playing instead, which actually came from one of the show's music cues. This cue can be heard in the episode "Red Dress" in the scene where Lois pulls the titular dress out of the toilet.

Availability: Can be seen on every episode of Malcolm in the Middle.
