Background

Shanghai Film Group (上海電影集團) evolved from the state-owned Shanghai Film Studio (上海電影製片廠), which had a long history since the establishment of the PRC. In the early 2000s, after an organisational reform, Shanghai Film Group Corporation (later Co., Ltd) became the listed parent company, with Shanghai Film Studio being the main component of the group.

Shanghai Film Studio

1st Logo (June 1, 1951-1964)

Visuals: On a gray cloud background, a worker-peasant-soldier (工农兵, gongnong bing) type statue rotates from the right. The company name in Chinese fades in below. This logo is almost identical to both the Northeast Film Studio and Beijing Film Studio logos.

Technique: Live-action model work.

Audio: The same fanfare used in both the Northeast Film Studio and Beijing Film Studio logos.

Availability: Seen on released films from this era. It made its debut in 小铁柱.

2nd Logo (1955-1964)

Visuals: Just Chinese text over a red background.

Technique: A still card produced on print.

Audio: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Seen on The Magical Pen and Stage Sisters.

3rd Logo (1971-1980s)


Visuals: On a cloud background, there is another worker-peasant-soldier statue with text underneath it. The concept is similar to other Chinese movie logos of the time, such as Beijing Film Studio and Changchun Film Studio.

Variants:

  • A B&W version with the white text exists.
  • A prototype variant has a different cloud and the Chinese text is different.
  • On some films, the statue is smaller and Chinese text is bigger.
  • A CinemaScope variant exists, with the Chinese text shifted wider and the statue in the left.

Technique: Live-action model work.

Audio: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Unknown. [Examples?]

4th Logo (February 18, 1981-Early 1992)


Visuals: On a sea green background with colorful twinkling stars, an ornate leafed frame fades in, then a red Chinese seal consisting of the characters "上影" fades in inside the frame. Afterwards, the Chinese text "上海電影製片廠" appears below.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: None or the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: Unknown. [Examples?]

5th Logo (Early 1992-1998?)


Visuals: There is the letter "S" drawing itself. A "Y" then draws itself and zooms in, then both letters turn into a ball and zoom out. The logo flashes and gold Chinese text zooms out, then a spacey blue gradient background appears behind it whilst flashing.

Technique: Traditional animation.

Audio: A trumpet fanfare.

Availability: Unknown. [Examples?]

6th Logo (1998?-2015?)


Visuals: The screen zooms out in space, while we see the glowing Earth spinning with an orange ring surrounding it, which later resembles an orange filmstrip. Various orange lights then zoom out and meet in the center, forming the logo (half a circle with a filmstrip border, half a rainbow gradient wireframe globe; a person with spread arms and legs is seen in front of it, half black and half white), which glows. The Chinese characters "上海電影製片廠" and English translation "SHANGHAI FILM STUDIO" zoom in below the logo. The space background freezes.

Visuals: Over a white background is the Shanghai Film Group logo, consisting of a rendition of a sail boat in a square cut shape, with "上海电影(集团)有限公司" and "SHANGHAI FILM GROUP" beside the emblem.

Audio: None.

Availability: Unknown. [Examples?]

Visuals: On a white background, there is a close-up of a blue and gold object. The screen then pans down and zoom out to reveal that it is the previous logo, now in the aforementioned gold and blue colors. Below it is the company name, also in gold.

Variants:

  • On Devastudios' website, the logo does not fade in or fade out.
  • Open-matte and darker variants exist.
  • On Baywatch, the logo is shortened.
  • On Michael Daniels' website, different color variants can be seen as style frames made before the colors of the logo were finalized.

Technique: CGI from Devastudios and Michael Daniels.

Audio: None or the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: First seen on Ghost in the Shell and Baywatch (both 2017), and has since been seen on many of the company's foreign films.

3rd Logo (September 30, 2019-)


Visuals: On a dark environment, a close-up of the same worker-peasant-soldier statue from the 3rd logo is seen, redone in gold. The camera then pans to a comfortable distance, with the background turning blue. Two light streaks then appear as the company name (in the same font as the 7th logo) in English and Chinese in gold fades in and appears below.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: It starts with a choir and a flute note, then a triumphant theme, with a drum beat accompanying the beginning and the end of the theme.

Availability: Contrary to the previous logo, this mostly appears on domestic productions. It debuted on The Climbers.
