Background

Skunk Studios (formerly Skunkworks Games) is a casual game company formed in 2001 by Margaret Wallace in San Francisco, California. The company started out making games for PC before moving onto mobile games in the 2010s. The company is still active today.

Skunkworks Games

(2001)

Logo: On a beige background, two purple, stylized "S"'s (stylized to look like skunk tails) zoom out. Underneath it are the worlds "Skunkworks Games" in a grungy font, and the URL "skunkworksgames.com".

FX/SFX: Simple zooming effects.

Music/Sounds: A zap sound accompanied by fast percussion, followed by two synthesized notes in quick succession.

Availability: Extremely rare. It was only seen on very early versions of QBeez. All other copies use the next logo. It can be still be found on early versions distributed by shockwave.com using Wayback Machine.

Skunk Games

1st Logo (2001-2004)

Logo: On a black background, we see the words "A GAME BY:" on top, and the skunk tails from before, only with stripes running through them this time. The logo unfolds, as the words "SKUNK STUDIOS" appear underneath, with "san francisco" in a spaced out font underneath. Then, each of them disappear one by one.

Variants:

  • Starting with every game after WordUp, the animation takes place on the opening credits of the game.
  • On Varmintz, the logo is entirely white.
  • On Spelvin, the title character hops on screen, then the logo (now a gold color) forms normally as he starts dancing.
  • On Tamale Loco: Rumble in the Desert II, the logo is already formed, and is brown on a beige background. The words "created by" are also on top.

FX/SFX: The logo unfolding, and the words appearing.

Music/Sounds: A slow hip-hop beat that ends with four hip-hop record scratching sounds. WordUp, as well as certain versions of Spelvin use a dramatic jazz theme.

Music/Sounds Variants:

  • The Tamale Loco variant uses a whoosh sound, followed by the title character saying "oohǃ"
  • On the GameHouse print of Spelvin, the logo is silent.

Availability: Common, appears on many of their games, such as QBeez, Gutterball 3D, Sveerz, Spelvin, WordUp, with the logo last appearing on Varmintz. All these games can be downloaded off their website.

Legacy: It's a favorite among those who grew up with their games.

2nd Logo (2004)

Logo: Nearly the same as the last logo, but the finished product appears inside a box in white, and the text appears stacked on top of each other.

FX/SFX: The logo appearing.

Music/Sounds: Same as the last logo.

Availability: Ultra rare. Only seen copies of Sveerz that were distributed by eGames.

3rd Logo (2004-2006)

Logo: A still version of the previous logo is shown on the game's loading screen, with "created by" appearing on top, the box is purple, and the company name is placed to the right. It is usually seen with other logos on the screen.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: Usually none, though Gutterball 2 has the opening theme play over (in newer versions, it depends on whether or not you have the music turned on. In older versions, it plays anyway)

Availability: Seen on later games by the company, such as Gutterball 2, Tennis Titans, Mah Jong Adventures and QBeez 2.

Legacy: Same as the first logo.

4th Logo (2008)

Logo: On an island background with a night sky, we see the Skunk Studios logo from the 2nd logo, except the box is purple, just like the previous logo.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Can be seen on newer versions of Tennis Titans.
