Background

Smash is a brand of instant mashed potatoes sold in the United Kingdom. Introduced in the 1960s by Cadbury and currently owned by Premier Foods, the brand is best known for their adverts featuring their mascots, the Smash Martians.

1st (known) Logo (1970s)

Logo: We see a can of Cadbury's Smash and a plate of mashed potatoes on a white floor against a black backdrop. Above the mashed potatoes is the word "mash" in a lowercase font. A capital letter "S" drops down beside "mash", making the word "Smash". Steam then rises from the mashed potatoes.

Technique: The scanimate "S" sliding down; the steam rising.

Music/Sounds: A male chorus singing "For mash, get Smash!"

Availability: Seen on adverts for Smash from the period, most notably the ones starting the Smash Martians.

Legacy: The Smash Martians have become pop-culture icons in the UK, even ranking #1 in ITV's Best Ever Ads.
