Background

Sofa Entertainment is the current name of Andrew Solt Productions, which has been in operation since the late 1970s. It controls the rights to The Ed Sullivan Show (which it purchased from Sullivan's estate in 1992).

1st Logo (February 17, 1991-2010s)

Visuals: There is a gray couch on a white background. A basset hound is seen lying on the couch. Meanwhile, the word "SOFA" appears letter by letter (in a puffy, almost pillow-like font) The word "ENTERTAINMENT" is seen near the bottom of the couch. The hound then turns around and barks.

Variant: The first Very Best of Ed Sullivan special from 1991 had a black cat stare at the viewer and the O on "SOFA" fly into its usual space. This was soon replaced with the logo described above.

  • On videos like Muppets Magic from The Ed Sullivan Show, the word "HOME" appears stacked beneath "SOFA" and above "ENTERTAINMENT" on the couch cushions.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: Usually the end theme of the show. The version with the dog has a five-note xylophone theme with the first four notes playing one at a time with the appearance of the letters.

Availability: Mostly only seen on their DVD releases; but was seen on VH1 in the late 1990s, when they aired Ed Sullivan's Rock and Roll Classics, a half hour of musical highlights from classic Ed Sullivan episodes. Also seen on PBS and syndicated half-hour edited reruns of The Ed Sullivan Show.

2nd Logo (2010s-)

Visuals: Same as the previous logo, but a more modern black couch is seen, with four sections in red, green, yellow, and blue, and the company name is in white, with "entertainment" in all lowercase.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: Same as the previous logo.

Availability: Seen on newer prints of Ed Sullivan's Rock and Roll Classics.
