Sofdec is a streaming video format created in April 1985 by CRI Middleware, supporting up to 24bit and seamless playback with frames up to 60 frames per second. Sofdec was commonly used with games for the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, and Xbox, and arcades.
Logo (November 27, 1998-March 16, 2007)
Visuals: On a black background, a 7-striped white diamond is seen with a "S"-like distortion going down the middle. Below the diamond is "Sofdec" in a futuristic font with an irregular underline. A "TM" symbol is seen next to the word.
Variants:
- In earlier games supporting the engine, the text reads "MPEG Sofdec" and a copyright notice can be shown.
- The logo is usually shown with the ADX logo.
- Sometimes, the logo appears on a white background.
- An animated version of the logo has the logo forming from 7 blue glass pieces of the diamond flying from all over the screen and meeting in the middle. When they all come together, the logo fades to the print logo.
- An animated variant of the earlier "MPEG Sofdec" logo exists as well, with the diamond spinning closer to the screen, and the name flipping upwards. Dark blue shade also appears on the logo.
- Another animated version exists where it cuts to a close up of the diamond, zooming out as the logo itself is formed.
Technique: Usually a still, digital graphic, but the animated variant is CGI.
Audio: None, but the animated variant may have a synth chime tune with ascending notes, an deep male announcer saying "Sofdec", or both.
Availability:
- Can be seen on Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and arcade titles using the engine. Known to be found on various Sega titles from the period, like Sonic Mega Collection.
- The animated version appears in the PS2 game Backyard Wrestling 2, and possibly other titles.
