Background
In late 1965, TV-ohjelma 2 was rebranded to simply TV2 when the channel first started broadcasting with colour, along with its first channel, TV1. Around 2012, the channel yet again rebranded to Yle TV2.
1st Logo (December 24, 1965-December 31, 1991)
Visuals: The same logo that Yle TV1 used at the time, but "TV 2" replaces "TV 1".
Variant: Much like in Yle TV1, the Swedish variant features the word "RUNDRADION" on the centre of the screen.
Technique: Same as the Yle TV1 logo at the time.
Audio: Same as the Yle TV1 logo at the time.
Availability: Featured as both startup and closedown idents through its long run, it could also be spotted before and after the MTV programming block. Much like in Yle TV1, the Swedish variant was featured when the day's broadcasting begins or ends with a Swedish program.
2nd Logo (1971-1987)
Visuals: Similar to the Yle TV1 logo at the time, the logo, which is "tv2" with the "2" in a square, is placed on a random spot in one of many photos.
Variants:
- Dated in August 13, 1981, there is a shot of a whooper swan coming up in the air near the water with the logo placed on the bottom right corner.
- Dated in July 16, 1985 is someone sailing around the lake on a small sailboat. The logo is placed on the top right, partly on the mainsail.
- Dated in January 13, 1986. a small bird can be seen sitting on a raspberry branch, as the logo is placed on the top left side of the screen.
- Dated in 1986, we have a shot of a tree in a forest with what appears to be a bird house on the side. The logo is near the bottom of the trunk.
- At the end of programs, the logo is coloured blue and is placed in the middle of a white background. The copyright text "OY YLEISRADIO AB TV2 (program type)" and release year are below it.
Technique: None. [possible misuse]
Audio: A snippet of "Tammerkosken Sillalla" played with a glockenspiel.
Availability: Could be seen before and after the MTV programming block. Much like the TV1 logo at the time, there may be more of these to be found.
3rd ID (1987-1990)
Visuals: On a grey-black gradient background, a strange blue shape starts to spin rapidly. As it spins, it zooms out, revealing a blue oblong with "Y L E" in it. As the shape settles above the oblong, it stops spinning, taking the shape of a bulbous "2" with a white gradient on top. The logo shines and casts a shadow, with what appears to be the true position of the shape.
Variants:
- Much like the TV1 logo at the time, a rarely seen ad bumper variant features both the TV2 and MTV logos on a black and dark blue gradient background.
- At the end of programs, the tail end of the logo is displayed on a grey background, with the bottom of it fading into the background. When the logo shines, the text "OY YLEISRADIO AB TV2 (program type) (year)" wipes in below. Capitalisation may vary.
Technique: 2D animation.
Audio: A chime is heard, followed by the melody from the previous logo being partially played on a guitar and the last part played on chimes.
Availability: Featured prior and after MTV and FST programming blocks. Much like in TV1, the ad bumper variant was used when the public broadcaster featured sponsored commercial breaks between live airings of sport events on TV2.
4th ID (1990-December 31, 1992)
Visuals: On a black background, a blue cloth appears, flowing around. Various different patterns then appear, as mirrored copies of the logo scroll away and the cloth also partially turns purple. As more patterns appear, various stripes wipe in, forming the logo from the previous logo except that the white gradient on top is segmented. "Y L E" then fades in below as the cloth continues to move.
Variants:
- An alternate version had the logo playing in reverse and the music having an echo effect to it.
- At the end of programs, the cloth appears, but it's a lot smaller and a line with a similar effect appears below it. The "2" from the 4th logo (with the gradient shine) then fades in above it, while "OY YLEISRADIO AB TV2 (year)" appears above the line and the program type below the line.
Technique: 2D animation.
Audio: A soothing saxophone theme.
Availability: Much like the previous logo, it was featured after the MTV or FST programming block has ended, while the variant was featured before either of them is about to begin.
5th ID (January 1, 1993-August 10, 1997)
Visuals: On a yellow, dark blue, red, or green background (possibly depending on the time of day), a disc zooms out and rotates around. This disk has a "2", very similar to the BBC 2 logo at the time, resting on a diagonally cut glass disk, with the halves being blue and red (which also are tinted). Around the disc is a ring and two streaks that continue to rotate.
Technique: CGI.
Audio: A quiet flute tune.
Availability: It was generally used as a transition ident between program ads and upcoming program announcements or Yle closedown ident at the time. It was also used before and after the FST programming block.
6th ID (August 11, 1997-January 2001)
Visuals: In a complex, bluish dimension, there is a multifaceted amount of number "2"'s placed randomly around the screen, while "2" in a stretched font appears inside the half-invisible aura at the centre, releasing multiple waves. At the same time, two small, glowing orbs are spinning around the stretched "2" and then burst into balls of light, while the other numbers fade out. The stretched "2" also bursts into a ball of lighting and the background changes to blue and red being divided indirectly in half from the centre. Two swans (one at the bottom in the middle and another at a far distance) are briefly flying at one place, while a dark turquoise orb fades in and starts forming multiple rings around it. The scene then transitions into a swan at the centre of the screen, creating ripples on a different background. The swan then morphs into a ball of lighting, that creates a large blue and red disk logo with the colours diagonally divided in half and a stretched "2" placed on it. "Y L E" also appears below the logo, while a reversed reflection of the word and a flock of swans on the complex background are seen.
Trivia: This ident was created and designed by visual effects artist Hugo Kiekeben.
Variants:
- An abridged variant begins with the number "2" seen at the centre of the screen, but the first wave coming from it transitions to the scene with the swan at the centre of the screen, turning into a ball of lighting and creating the logo.
- Another version of both the long and abridged variants exists, where the background at the end of the ident is also split in half in blue and red. The splitting point passes from the same point on the solid disk logo where its two colours are separated.
- A separate transition ident has the solid logo creating surface waves, while approaching closer on a complex, dark blue background.
Technique: The CGI background, the surface waves, the lighting effects, the animated swans. [possible misuse]
Audio: A calm and soothing theme composed by Ile Kallio.
Audio Variants:
- An abridged variant plays the last ten seconds of the music. Another version features an off-screen announcement of the upcoming program along the music.
- The last four-notes of the theme are heard in the transition variant.
Availability: The regular variant was featured as both a startup and closedown ident for the channel as well as prior to the FST programming block. The abridged variant was featured after the closure of the programming block, while the separate transition variant were generally seen between program ads and announcement of the next program.
