Background

The United Lutheran Church in America, which through mergers became part of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, co-produced the clay-animated television series Davey & Goliath with Clokey Productions.

1st Logo (February 25, 1961-1973)

Visuals: On a blue background with an illustration of the Lutheran symbol, the words:

Produced by
THE LUTHERAN CHURCH
IN AMERICA
and
CLOKEY PRODUCTIONS, INC.

are shown in a yellow sans-serif font which was used in the show Davey & Goliath.

Variants: In some episodes, the yellow text is in a medieval font. Others have the yellow letters in a medieval font against a black background. "The Family Of God" has the yellow text in the sans-serif font on a simple green-black background. An occasional error involves the logo being interrupted by a textless version of the "THE END" slide.

Technique: A still graphic.

Audio: A stirring horn rendition of the first four bars of "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God".

Audio Trivia: The horn rendition used in the logo is actually taken from the original opening sequence of Davey & Goliath.

Audio Variant(s): On the first couple of episodes, a different rendition of "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" is used that plays over the logo as well as the entire credits scene. In "The Family Of God", a song being sung at the end of the episode plays over the logo. At least two 1970's episode has an upbeat orchestral piece playing over the logo.

Availability: This logo is most likely available on old Davey & Goliath videocassettes, notably those from Gospel Films Video and Augsburg Fortress Video (for the "Family of God" variants).

2nd Logo (1991?-2004)

Visuals: On a dark, starry sky background, a globe with blue seascape and olive-gold landscape zooms towards forward from the right. Surrounding it is a huge olive-gold ring. As it engulfs the screen, a close-up of the word "ELCA" is visible against a transparent white background. As the globe zooms away, it settles in the center to reveal the words "THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA" in white written on the other side of the ring. As it spins, a white glowing light in shape of a cross appears in front of it.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: An uplifting synth fanfare, followed by a male announcer saying "This has been a production of The Evangelical Lutheran Church In America."

Availability: Spotted at the end of some Davey & Goliath tapes released by UAV Corporation in the early 90s. For some odd reason, "Trusting" doesn't have this logo at the end.

3rd Logo (2004- )

Visuals: A bright, colorful star field can be seen, filled with shades of blue & green respectively. There's a globe rotating in the center surrounded by 7 stars (3 lavender, 2 white and 2 red) twinkling brightly. Then a large gold medallion with the abstract picture of a globe embossed on it twirls in the center, and as the globe disappears, 16 stained glass window shapes (4 red, 4 yellow, 4 lime green & 4 blue) appear on one side. Then the entire backdrop all fades away to a shady white wall background and the gold disc disappears, leaving the circular stained glass window design, now bordered with sketchy black outlines. The words "EVANGELICAL-LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA" appear in a circle around the design, as does "© (year)" below it all.

Variant: On Davey & Goliath's Skateboard, a longer version is used with the medallion remaining on screen for a few seconds more on the white wall before fading to the logo. No copyright date appears below it.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A few piano notes followed by an orchestral hit.

Availability: Seen on DVDs of Davey & Goliath by Starlight Entertainment and on TBN airings of said show.
