Background

These are the Stay Tuned bumpers from the Tom and Jerry show on CBS. They were made by Chuck Jones at MGM Animation/Visual Arts.

(1965-1972)

Bumper: There are over six or eight bumpers like this but from them it can count:

  • Break from cartoon #1: Tom and Jerry are seen riding skateboards. Tom is seen attempting to grab Jerry with both of his hands. Jerry soon realizes what is happening and quickly turns around. Tom then turns his head around, not realizing he is still rolling along the street. He soon falls into the hole of a sewer. Then, the sign "STAY TUNED FOR PART TWO" is seen being slid from the right side of the screen by a construction worker's hand. The construction worker stops moving the sign when it is above the hole of the sewer. The completed bumper waits about 1 second before fading to black, being followed by a set of commercials.
  • Break from cartoon #2: Tom is seen on a circus stage flying on the trapeze. Tom is ready to get Jerry but instead is a sign saying "OUT TO LUNCH". Tom is scared and falls. As soon as Tom starts falling, we see Jerry eating his lunch, sitting and relaxing next to his lunchbox. As soon as Tom falls into the lunchbox, he gives a frustrated face. Jerry then closes Tom into his lunchbox, and as soon as he does so, the white text "STAY TUNED FOR PART TWO" appears on his lunchbox. Jerry then hops onto his lunchbox and lies on his back, before the bumper fades to black, being followed by a set of commercials.
  • Cartoon continues : Not really a bumper, but on a magenta background, we see the words "(Cartoon Name) continues".

Technique: 60's animation.

Audio: It depends on the bumper, but on the "Cartoon continues" bumper to start the 2nd part of the cartoon you are watching, you hear a little piano piece.

Availability: These were seen on The Tom and Jerry Show on CBS. They were also seen on WPIX in the 80's.
