Background

This is the production arm of UTV, formerly Ulster Productions.

Ulster Productions

1st Logo (October 31, 1959-1969)

Logo: Superimposed in the end credits, the oscilloscope logo is within an outlined box next to the stacked text "ULSTER TELEVISION Northern Ireland".

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Extinct, seen on The Scandalous Parson.

2nd Logo (1969-1987)

Logo: It is a still version of the 1969 ident with "COLOUR" added underneath the company name.

Variants:

  • A black and white variant exists.
  • A variant has a copyright stamp in Roman numerals and a white color underneath "PRODUCTION".
  • On one programme, "COLOUR" is replaced with "OUTSIDE BROADCAST".
  • An in-credit variant exists, consisting of the logo and text in a thicker format and the company name in a serif font.
  • An extremely rare co-production variant exists where the logo is paired with six other ITV franchise logos on a blue background. Ulster's logo appears on the bottom center.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Ultra rare. The black and white variant was seen on Billy Graham in Ulster.

3rd Logo (January 1, 1989-June 4, 1993)

Logo: Like before, it is a still version of its respective 1989 ident but with "production" inserted underneath the company name.

Variants:

  • Starting on September 1, 1989, the logo is given a gradient look and the text reads "AN ULSTER TELEVISION PRODUCTION FOR" and the 1989 ITV logo can be seen below.
  • Programmes co-produced with Channel 4 has the gray bar placed on the bottom of the screen, reading the copyright notice in Roman numerals. Above it is "An Ulster Television Production for CHANNEL FOUR".

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Ultra rare. Can be seen on Swings & Roundabouts, God's Frontiersmen, and An Irish Evening: Live at the Grand Opera House, Belfast.

UTV Productions

1st Logo (June 4, 1993-2001)

Logo: Just a still version of the 1993 ident.

Variants:

  • Most of the time, the logo exists as an in-credit notice.
  • On a 1999 episode of Insight, the logo was given a shadow effect.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Ultra rare.

  • The normal logo was seen on a 1995 UTV airing to Murder, She Wrote.
  • The in-credit variant can be seen on Insight and Ulster Unearthed.

2nd Logo (2003)

Logo: The print version of the UTV logo with "PRODUCTION" added underneath is against a blue background with rising streaks. They crossfade into another background with a spotlight at the top right corner of the screen.

FX/SFX: The streaks rising.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Extinct, seen on Insight episodes from this period.

3rd Logo (2000s)

Logo: Mainly an in-credit notice containing the 2002 UTV logo.

FX/SFX: None.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Ultra rare; only known to appear on later episodes of Lesser Spotted Ulster, which are intact on Northern Ireland Screen's Digital Film Archive website.

4th Logo (2009)

Logo: On a dark blue moving background, a shaded version of the UTV logo is shown underneath a co-producer's name.

FX/SFX: The background moving.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Extinct. Like the 2nd logo, it is only known to appear on Insight episodes from the late 2000's.

5th Logo (2012)

Logo: On a dark blue background with a spinning glass UTV logo, a shiny version of the UTV logo is displayed either on the center or bottom of the screen if paired with a co-producer.

FX/SFX: The UTV logo spinning in the background.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Same as before.

6th Logo (2016-2020)

Logo: On a white background with a part of it peeling away, the 2016 UTV logo in turquoise is on top of "PRODUCTION" and a copyright stamp on the bottom.

Variant: An in-credit variant exists. In a similar fashion to the 2013 ITV endcap, the logo is either white or black on a black/white background and with "PRODUCTION" removed.

FX/SFX: The part of the background peeling away.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the programme.

Availability: Very rare, although some programmes such as Paul & Nick's Big Canadian Food Trip and Rewind with Julian can be found on streaming websites. The normal logo was seen on the latter.
