Background

Unexpected Development was a small game development company based in San Francisco, California that was founded in 1992 by Cary Hammer. It mostly handled games for Nintendo Game Boy and Sega Game Gear, as well as the console ports of BattleSport. In 1998, the company was closed.

1st Logo (1993-1995)

Visuals: On a white background, there is a square with a letter "u", the right ride of which is an arrow pointing up. Underneath, there is the name "Unexpected Development".

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the colors are inverted.
  • On Game Gear games, the words are stacked.
  • On Phantom 2040 for Game Gear, the background is colored purple.

Technique: A still, sprite-based graphic.

Audio: None or the game's title theme.

Availability: Appears on such games as Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade's Revenge and Shaq Fu for Game Boy and Jungle Strike and Phantom 2040 for Game Gear.

2nd Logo (June 30, 1997)

Visuals: The sequence begins on a grassy field on a sunny day, with birds flying in the sky. As the camera slowly pans up, the logo (a "U" that casts the shadow of a "D" with the stacked name "UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENT" underneath) fades and zooms in. A bird flies in from the right side of the screen into the logo's path; it proceeds to get hit by the logo and is sent flying towards the camera. The background fades to white.

Technique: 3D animation.

Audio: A calm woodwind theme that ends with a crescendo, accompanied by house sparrows chirping. The final bird yelps in pain when it gets hit.

Availability: Only appears on BattleSport for PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC.
