Background

Universal Music Hong Kong (香港環球唱片) is the Hong Kong branch of Universal Music Group. Alongside Warner Music Hong Kong and Sony Music Hong Kong, they are the three major record labels in Hong Kong. Originally founded in 1957 as Diamond Records, later known as Polydor Records (Hong Kong) in 1971 and PolyGram Records Ltd. (Hong Kong) in 1979, they launched the careers of several famous Cantonese singers such as Sam Hui, Alan Tam, Jacky Cheung, Hacken Lee, Priscilla Chan and others. In 1999, when Universal Music Group acquired PolyGram Records, PolyGram Records Ltd. (Hong Kong) was renamed to Universal Music Limited and later Universal Music Hong Kong.

1st Logo (1990-1999)

Opening Logo: On a black background, we see the following:

with the PolyGram logo (the word "PolyGram" underlined in red) under it. If you look closely, the red line is animated (a line of red dots that continuously move leftwards).

Closing Logo: At the end of the program, we see the PolyGram logo on a black background. Below is a copyright tag that reads:

Marketed by PolyGram Records Ltd.,
Hong Kong/Singapore/Malaysia.

Variants (Opening Logo):

On early releases, the logo is in white and the text is in a different font.
On later releases, the PolyGram logo and text are smaller.
On the Alan Tam in concert '91 Laserdisc, the logo is on a metallic background. The text is in a different font and the PolyGram text is colored in black.
On early Hacken Lee karaoke Laserdiscs, the logo is in dark blue.

Variants (Closing Logo):

On Taurus Records releases, the Taurus Records logo appears next to the PolyGram logo. The copyright notice is in light blue.
Sometimes, the logo and copyright text are smaller.
A variant exists, where the copyright text and the PolyGram logo text are in a bolder font.
A variant exists, where the logo is on a grey background.

Technique: Simple 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Can be found on most of their karaoke Laserdisc and VHS releases. The blue logo variant can only be found on Hacken Lee karaoke Laserdisc releses.

2nd Logo (1992?-1998)

Logo: On a yellow background, two small sparks of light write the text "PolyGram" in a cream-colored font. The text then turns 3D and bevels out. Two sparks of light then appear and spread out to form the red line underneath (also animated similar to the last logo).

Technique: Early computer animation.

Music/Sounds: A synthesized fanfare.

Availability: Can be found on their later releases, used together with the 1st logo.

3rd Logo (1998-2001)

Logo: On a starry purple gradient background (resembling Space), a bunch of 3D letters spin and fly around the screen. While this happens, stars can be seen passing through from the top left, top right, and below the screen on the left. The letters then come together to form the word “PolyGram”. A ball of light comes from the right side of the screen and starts spinning clockwise around the text in a spiral motion until it gets to the “P”. The ball of light stops spinning and then draws a red line below the “PolyGram” text.

Technique: Computer animation.

Music/Sounds: A synthesized fanfare.

Availability: Rare. Appers on very late releases from the company.

Universal Music Limited

1st Logo (2001-2007)

Logo: On a black background, a blurred image of the 1997 Universal Pictures logo fades in before the blur slowly fades away. The text “Universal Music Limited” fades in below the logo, and a glow of light appears on the text, moving from left to right. The glow of light fades away while moving back to the left, and the whole logo fades out.

Variant: On the DVD release of Leslie Cheung's 2000 live concert, the print logo appears next to the logo for ApexMusic Productions.

Technique: Blurring effects and simple 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: A "wooshing" sound.

Availability: Rare. Can be found on their early releases. The logo was also found on a Bee Gees documentary DVD, despite the company being called Universal Music Hong Kong by that time.

2nd Logo (2001-2003?)

Logo: The 1997 Universal print logo appears with Universal Music Limited written below it, along with copyright text, saying the following:

On the DVD release of Leslie Cheung's 2000 live concert, the copyright text states the following:

Universal Music Hong Kong

1st Logo (2004-2010?)

Logo: On a black background, a circle of streaks form a globe. Soon after, letters "UNIVERSAL" fly in front of the globe, in which the streaks flash to the 1997 Universal print logo, the text "UNIVERSAL MUSIC" and "環球音樂 ("UNIVERSAL MUSIC" in Chinese).

Technique: Computer animation.

Music/Sounds: Electronic sounds, followed by a humming sound and an announcer saying "Universal Music".

Availability: Rare. Can be found on their early DVD and VCD releases.

2nd Logo (2002-)

Logo: Same as the 2nd Universal Music Limited logo, except the print logo has "環球音樂" ("Universal Music" in Chinese) written below it, along with copyright text saying the following:

Availability: Common. Can be found on their DVD and Blu-Ray releases.

3rd Logo (2008)

Logo: On a black background, the 1997 Universal print logo with "UNIVERSAL MUSIC HONG KONG" written below slowly zooms in.

Variant: The background is white and "UNIVERSAL MUSIC HONG KONG" is written in blue.

Technique: Simple animation.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Rare. Can be seen on promotional videos from their Youtube channel.
