North American Warnings
NOTE: During the DiscoVision days and going into the MCA Videodisc era, there was no real warning screen.
1st Warning (December 11, 1978-1981)
Visuals: On a blue background is the following text in white:
THIS MOTION PICTURE IS PROTECTED UNDER LAWS OF THE
UNITED STATES AND OTHER COUNTRIES. UNAUTHORIZED
DUPLICATION, DISTRIBUTION OR EXHIBITION MAY RESULT IN
CIVIL LIABILITY AND CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.
Trivia: The entire warning text was used in the end credits of Universal's films during this era, and is still used currently (albeit with "THE" placed in between "UNDER" and "LAWS").
Variants: Sometimes the text was chyroned. Other times, it appeared as a card. It also existed as a filmed variant. A black and white variant was used on B&W films.
Technique: A still, computerized graphic.
Audio: None.
Availability: Seen only on Universal laserdisc/DiscoVision releases of the time. This was also seen on non-DiscoVision releases pressed at the DiscoVision plant such as the 1981 Magnetic Video laserdisc of Alien, the 1981 Columbia Pictures Home Entertainment laserdiscs of Close Encounters of the Third Kind: The Special Edition, The China Syndrome and Chapter Two, and the 1981 Paramount Home Video laserdisc of Charlotte's Web. This typically followed the program material. It was also seen on some MCA Home Video/Videocassette releases such as the 1981 MCA Videocassette release of The Andromeda Strain, the 1982 MCA Videocassette release of The Eiger Sanction, and the 1984 MCA Home Video release of Rear Window. This was also located on the Fotomat Betamax rental release of Saturday Night Fever from 1979, which used the master print created for MCA DiscoVision. The Blu-ray release of The Sting preserves the black and white variant.
2nd Warning (December 11, 1978-1981)
Visuals: On a black background is the following text in a white Impact font:
LICENSED ONLY FOR NON-
COMMERCIAL PRIVATE EXIHIBITION
IN HOMES. ALL RIGHTS UNDER
COPYRIGHT RESERVED.
The word "exhibition" is misspelled.
Technique: A still, computerized graphic.
Audio: None.
Availability: Seen on a handful of DiscoVision releases. Most DiscoVision releases went from the opening straight to the opening logo. [Examples?]
3rd Warning (April 15, 1980-April 11, 1991; 1993)
Visuals: On a black background is the word "WARNING" at the top of the screen, in red and in Helvetica. Below it is the following text, in a smaller white font:
The motion picture contained in this videocassette is protected under the copyright laws of the United States and other countries. This cassette is sold for home use only and all other rights are expressly reserved by the copyright owner of such motion picture. Any copying or public performance of such motion picture is strictly prohibited and may subject the offender to civil liability and severe criminal penalties (Title 17, United States Code, Sections 501 and 506). |
Variants:
- Some MCA Home Video releases have a screen freeze of this warning.
- On some releases of black and white films, this warning appears in black and white.
- Starting in 1983, the warning screen began use on MCA Home Video laserdiscs. The text, which is in a thinner font, is altered to reference "videodiscs" instead, the "Title 17" section is located below the text, and "WARNING" is even thicker. This was used until 1989, in tandem with the next warning for a year.
- On most French Canadian releases from MCA/Universal and Alliance, the following text in white scrolls up:
AVERTISSEMENT

vidéocassette est protégé par
les lois sur les droits d'auteur
des Etats Unis et autres pays.
Ce vidéocassette est vendu
pour utilisation à domicile
seulement et tous les autres

et peut exposer le

applications de la loi pénale.
Technique: A still, computerized graphic.
Audio: None.
Availability: Seen on every MCA Videocassette Inc. and most MCA Home Video releases. This includes all VHS and Betamax releases on MCA Home Video. It can also be found on early MCA/Universal Home Video releases, as well as early releases from Cineplex Odeon Video and a few early releases from Alliance Releasing Home Video, particularly Night Crawl and Bedroom Eyes II, among others. The last tape from Cineplex Odeon Video to have this warning was Frozen Assets in 1993. Can also be found on later KVC Home Video releases. Late DiscoVision releases and most MCA Videodisc releases did not use any warning at all. One of the last VHS releases to have this warning was Child's Play 2 in 1991. The warning makes an appearance at the start of the 1982 Vestron Video release of Benji, followed by a long stretch of black before the feature presentation, as well as the French-Canadian Cineplex Odeon VHS of The Last Temptation of Christ, where it plasters over the 1963 Universal logo for some reason.
4th Warning (1988-February 1, 2005)
Visuals: Same as the previous warning, but it looks more modern and the word "WARNING" is in fire engine red.
Variants:
- There is a DVD variant of the warning in which the word "WARNING" was slightly larger, colored a regular shade of red and doesn't have a drop shadow, and the warning text was somewhat modified. This was also used on laserdisc releases starting in 1988, with a slightly different font.
- On classic movies, the warning is in black and white.
- There is a Canadian variant in which the words "Title 17, United States Code, Section 501 and 506" are replaced with the Anti-Piracy message from the Canadian Bureau of Protection of Film and Videocassette with the toll-free number (1-800-361-9166) and the words "All calls confidential". This was spotted on the 1988 VHS release of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and on most Alliance (Atlantis) releases from 1992 to 2005, before Alliance Atlantis started to use its own Interpol warning.
- A Spanish-language variant exists on Spanish-dubbed releases of movies such as Babe and Casper.
Technique: A still, computerized graphic.
Audio: None.
Availability: Seen on most MCA/Universal Home Video, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Cineplex Odeon Video (Some releases from 1990, but mainly releases from mid-1992 until mid-1993 for the regular variant. The Canadian variant appears on Cineplex Odeon tapes from 1993 until 1998, when the company folded), Trimark Home Video, Lionsgate Home Entertainment, Alliance/Alliance Atlantis and DreamWorks Home Entertainment releases from the era. The DVD version was seen on Universal and DreamWorks DVD releases of the era, as well as Trimark, Goodtimes and pre-2005 Lionsgate DVD releases. Also seen on some later MCA Home Video LaserDiscs. This logo did not start use on VHS until 1991, with Amazing Stories Book One, Havana, Somebody Has to Shoot the Picture, and the two volumes of Woody Woodpecker Collector's Edition being the first tapes to use this warning.
5th Warning (January 11, 2005-May 1, 2012)
Visuals: Same as the other companies' warnings from 2004, except the background is slightly zoomed in, the FBI Anti-Piracy Warning seal is slightly larger, and the warning text is in a silver Arial Narrow font with a drop shadow underneath it.
Variants:
- On Universal Music releases, the text appears in English first, then French and Spanish.
- The French and Spanish variants also appear if you select one of those two from your DVD Player or Xbox 360 settings.
- On the 2007 DVD release of 30 Rock: Season 1, the Walt Disney/Buena Vista variant appears instead, followed by the Spanish translation from this warning.
Technique: A still, computerized graphic.
Audio: None.
Availability:
- Seen on all Universal VHS, UMD, DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray releases from 2005-2012, such as the DVD editions of The Land Before Time XI: Invasion of the Tinysauruses and Vanity Fair (the VHS editions contain the previous warning), Friday Night Lights, Balto III: Wings of Change, Apollo 13: 10th Anniversary Edition, In Good Company, White Noise, Unleashed, Mallrats: 10th Anniversary Extended Edition, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, American Dreamz, The Adventures of Brer Rabbit, Curious George, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Hollywoodland, Breach, The Bourne Ultimatum, Baby Mama, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie, Coraline, Wanted, Frost/Nixon, Despicable Me, and Hop. It was last seen on the 2012 Blu-rays of About a Boy, Meet Joe Black, Definitely, Maybe, and Pillow Talk.
- This also appeared at the beginning of the 2005 DreamWorks DVD release of War of the Worlds in place of their own warning screen, and most Genius-era Weinstein Company Home Entertainment DVDs such as Doogal, Scary Movie 4, Clerks II, Prey, Miss Potter, Thunderpants, Death Proof, Cassandra’s Dream, and Fanboys. It also appears on Image Entertainment and Summit Entertainment releases.
- This appears in scope form on The Dilemma (2011) on Amazon Prime Video.
- It also makes an appearance at the beginning of Hop whenever it airs on YTV, Cartoon Network Canada (formerly Teletoon), and Disney Channel Canada.
6th Warning (May 15, 2012-)
Visuals: Same as the 2012 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment FBI warning, except the logos are smaller, the positioning of the text in each screen is slightly altered and "www.iprcenter.gov" is in teal.
Variants:
- On 4K Ultra HD discs, the original SPHE version appears instead.
- A widescreen version exists since 2019.
- On the 2016 Vault Series DVD-R of City Streets, only the first screen is shown.
- On Neon releases, as well as the 2019 Blu-ray of Leave It to Beaver, the screens fade in and out.
- On the 2021 of News of the World, only the second screen is shown.
Technique: A still, computerized graphic.
Audio: None.
Availability:
- Seen on newer Universal releases on DVD, Blu-ray and UHD, such as The Grey, Side Effects, Safe House, ParaNorman, Meet the Small Potatoes, the Despicable Me sequels, 2 Guns, Get on Up, Blackhat, Trainwreck, Straight Outta Compton, both Minions movies, Hail, Caesar!, The Girl on the Train, Get Out, Race, both Sing movies, Split, Good Boys, Abominable, The Croods: A New Age, and The Bad Guys, among others.
- This also appeared on October-December 2013 Fox DVDs, the 2014 DVD of Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and all Fox Blu-Rays with this screen from December 2012-April 2020.
