Logo description by LARDLOGORETURNS Photo by LARDLOGORETURNS

Background: This was a division of WGBH Boston that broadcast sports programming (usually tennis matches) on their networks.

1st logo (1977?-19??)

WGBH Boston Sports (1977) (A) Logo: Against a dark green background, a light yellow ball bounces around the screen as the camera follows. The following text can be seen in the background:

WGBH SP RTS

"WGBH" is in a white Rockwell font. "SP RTS" is in a white bold Rockwell font. The ball goes off screen for a couple of seconds leaving only the background. Suddenly, the ball returns and rams into the "RTS" moving it slightly. The ball stops in between the "P" and "R" as the logo settles. "BOSTON" in a smaller thin white version of Rockwell fades in below followed by "PRESENTS" which is slightly larger below. The end result looks like this:

WGBH SP●RTS BOSTON PRESENTS

The logo slides off screen to the right to make way for the title screen.

FX/SFX: 2D animation.

Music/Sounds: Beeps that sound like ones heard in an opening countdown as the logo forms. The opening audio to the program as the logo slides off screen.

Availability: Extinct. Appeared on sports broadcasts by WGBH at the time. Surprisingly resurfaced as part of a segment on Greater Boston in 2003.

Editor's Note: The logo is made up of cheaper animation than its more famous counterpart. Other than that, this may be one of the rarest WGBH logos in existence.
