Background: WYES-TV is a PBS affiliate located in New Orleans, Louisiana, that signed on the air on April 1, 1957. From the station's sign-on until June 8, 1970, WYES was on channel 8. On June 8, 1970, WYES would switch channel numbers with then-ABC affiliate WVUE (now a Fox affiliate), and now broadcasts on channel 12.
1st (Known) Logo
(1977?-1987)
Logo: On a dark blue background, a rotating red-orange mass of stripes comes rotating in from the right. As such, it then zooms out and forms into a abstract-looking "12", made of orange/hot pink bicolored lines, and the "2" ending with an arrow. "WYES·TV", in a black font styled after the 1971 PBS logo, zooms in from the bottom, and flips to face upright.
FX/SFX: The flipping.
Music/Sounds: An whimsical flute tune, which ends with horns at the end.
Availability: Extinct.
Editor's Note: This logo is just poorly designed. The effects are simple, the 12 looks ugly, and the color palette is bad.
2nd (Known) Logo
(1984?-1987?)
Nickname: "The Building"
Logo: We fade to the gate of a TV studio. The camera pans to the left and we see the WYES logo, consisting of "WYES-TV" in a roundish font, and the number "12" (its channel number, obviously) in the same font but bolder, on a stone wall with plants below "New Orleans" in CG Omega font.
Variant: Quite often we cut to a shot of the logo without the camera turning away from the TV studio's gate.
FX/SFX: The rotating of the shot.
Music/Sounds: The end-title theme from any show.
Availability: Can be found at the end of Justin Wilson's cooking shows on VHS. Chef Paul Prudhomme's Fiery Foods also has this logo at the end. However, this doesn't appear on the WETA/WYES coproduction Spaceflight despite WETA's logo putting in an appearance at the start.
Editor's Note: None.
3rd (Known) Logo
(2001-2008)
Logo: We see "WyES", colored blue, above "New Orleans!", in script. Alongside is a Lily Flower (A Fleur-de-Lis, one of the symbols of Louisiana). All of this is superimposed on an orange gradient background superimposed with a trumpet player playing his trumpet. Toward the end, "New Orleans!" flashes.
FX/SFX: Live action.
Music/Sounds: A 6-note trumpet fanfare.
Availability: Seen on programming from the period.
Editor's Note: None.
4th (Known) Logo
(2008?-)
Logo: We see a water background superimposed over black fences with a "w". A circle effect transitions into two bridges with a streched "y". Then we blur fade into the St. Louis Cathedral with a lens flare and an "e". We fade into a statue of Andrew Jackson riding a horse, with a transparent "s". Finally, a bright light from the bottom-right corner reveals, a superimposition of New Orleans related images. At the bottom-right corner, we see "wyes" beside the PBS logo above "new orleans", and to the left is a transparent fleur de lis.
FX/SFX: Live action and animation.
Music/Sounds: A rhythmic tune.
Availability: Current.
Editor's Note: None.
