2nd Screen (Dashboard Errors) (November 15, 2001-August 2005)

Visuals: On the Xbox dashboard (or, in some cases, a black screen), a futuristic green dialogue box will appear by folding out from the top of the screen. The text in the box varies depending on the error. The user may be given the option to press the A button to Continue depending on the error.

Variants: Below is a list of error messages and their potential causes:

  • Your Xbox can't recognize this disc. Make sure it's an Xbox game, DVD movie, or audio CD. Also check to see if the disc is dirty or damaged. Remove the disc to continue.
This can be seen commonly when the Xbox can't read an inserted disc, whether due to it being scratched, an unrecognisable disc (such as a non-Xbox DVD game), or faults with the disc drive itself.
  • Invalid DVD region. Remove the disc to continue.
This is triggered when a DVD is inserted with a region code that does not match the Xbox's DVD region code.
  • You need to connect the DVD Playback Kit receiver to a controller port to watch movies. Remove the disc to continue.
This can be seen when trying to watch a DVD Video without the DVD Playback Kit inserted into a controller port. Interestingly, this can sometimes show up when trying to play a damaged Xbox disc, as the console may see it as a regular DVD and try to play the video included on every Xbox disc.
