Background

Young America Films was an American educational company that produced many instructional films about life and other topics. They were around from the 1940's to 1960's.



1st Logo (1946)

Logo: On a dimly lit gray background, the company name is arced around "Presents" in a cursive, handwritten font. Underneath it is a stylized, straight eagle with minimal facial features and two white stars between it on the bottom of the screen.

Closing Logo: "The End", in a large size, different cursive font, and a black shadow facing the bottom right, is placed above the eagle.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The opening/closing theme of the film.

Availability: Ultra rare. Only known to appear on How Do You Do.

2nd Logo (1946-1951)

Logo: On a light gray background, a stylized picture of a black eagle with minimal facial features is shown on the bottom center alongside two white stars on each side with black shadows. On top of the eagle is the company name in capitalization and "Presents", both with a shadow facing the bottom right.

Variants:

  • An early version has the logo set on a black-gray gradient background.
  • On Drawing for Beginners, the background is a gray carpet pattern.
  • On H, The Story Of A Teenage Drug Addict, "Presents is on top of the eagle.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Logo: Same as the opening variant but the only text present is "THE END".

Variants:

  • The early and Drawing for Beginners variants have the font in Times New Roman.
  • H, The Story Of A Teenage Drug Addict has the text in a different serif font.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The closing theme of the film.

Availability: Extremely rare, as their films have gone out of print. It was seen on the company's earliest educational films with the earliest being Tommy's Day and the latest including H, The Story Of A Teenage Drug Addict. This was also seen on the Drawing For Beginners and Cooking series.

3rd Logo (1948-1956)

Logo: On a gray wall background, the eagle from before but in gray and clearer details on its face and body is shown and now shifted slightly upwards. The text and stars from before are intact but with a smaller shadow. "presents" is in a cursive font and placed underneath the eagle's face.

Variants:

  • An early version of the logo has the background in black and the eagle in a darker shade. It also has a white outline with a dissolve effect.
  • A special variant was used for The Search where the eagle is smaller and positioned on the top section of the screen. The company name is arced over it and "Presents" is pasted on top of the eagle's face. Underneath it is "A CBS TELEVISION PRESENTATION" with two stars next to the latter word. Underneath it all is "TELEVISION USE PROHIBITED" in an outlined white box with a black shadow facing the bottom right.
  • On some films, the eagle has a black outline.
  • On Buying Food, the eagle is glowing.
  • A rare colorized variant features the eagle in red.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Logo: It follows the same concept as the previous logo but with "A YOUNG AMERICA FILMS' Release" in a stacked format on the bottom of the screen.

Variants:

  • On Speech: The Function of Gestures, the background is black.
  • The Search has the eagle from the opening variant positioned in the center and the two stars next to it are aligned to the bird's bottom. "A" sits in the bottom center of the eagle's body and the company name is underneath both the stars and eagle. "RELEASE" is italicized.
  • Sometimes, the company's notice is omitted.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Extremely rare. Like before, it can be seen on out of print educational films from the 1950's, which include the Safety and Why Study series, Buying Food, among others. The colorized variant was seen on a VHS print of Glen Wakes Up.

4th Logo (1958-1960)

Logo: Inside a white circle is a less detailed version of the eagle from before alongside two outlined stars. Arced over it is the company name in black. The logo is typically accompanied by the McGraw-Hill Text Films logo on the left.

Variant: On later episodes of The Search, the logo is larger and the eagle has a black outline, detailing its facial features. Several outlined stars arc over the eagle and the company name arcs below it.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: The opening theme of the film.

Availability: Ultra rare, as this was near the end of the company's lifespan. Seen on The Snob, Understanding Others, What About Prejudice?, among several other of their last films.
