AVID:Requests for Comment/Show intros

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Show/film intros, openings/endings, and show-specific breakbumpers/eyecatches

This was suggested by logoarto in the Discord server. I am currently unsure of this to be honest, but a couple of other people seem to favor this. Gilby1385 (talk) 20:18, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Elaborating my proposal, I'm proposing title sequences to be included on the wiki because:

  • These sequences are considered audiovisual identities and graphic design, which are already well covered in other areas within this wiki;
  • Since we already have news intros on this wiki, we could introduce these as well;
  • We technically already described a few show intros before:
    • we used to have pages for Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse during the WF era
    • The Neon Mickey WDHV logo is technically a show intro for The Wonderful World of Walt Disney (then simply known as Walt Disney)

Now before you say "they're not corporate identity", well warning screens and test cards aren't corporate identity either! But they do count as graphic identities, and film titles do fall under that as well. For example, the Star Wars opening sequence has become so iconic that it becomes a "brand" of the franchise itself. They're also considered graphic design: in fact many title sequences were designed by a specific branch of graphic designers called "title designers".

I'm proposing them to be categorized as "title sequences" to both include opening title sequences/intros and closing title sequences. Notice the emphasis on "sequences": normal scrolling credits won't be included as they are not graphic identity.

And by including title sequences, I'm also proposing the inclusion of show-specific break bumpers (in Japan better known as eyecatches). I mean we already have regular break bumpers on this wiki right?

And for the issue that it will be too long or detailed, my idea is that for title sequences, you dont have to go into great detail like youre describing a production logo. However, the part where the title appears, that's where you may get into detail. You can also split them into separate scenes.

Here are demos I and Gilby made:

I would like to hear your opinions on this. Thanks Logoarto (talk) 16:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

EDIT 2: After further discussion with other staff, they agreed that this should be a spin-off wiki. The reasoning is as follows, as spoken by Discord admin Luke2505: TV show intros will have a different enough community and it’s really broad. Making it in its own separate wiki will help bring more people in (as more people will search for a TV intro wiki if they’re looking for that, rather than a logo wiki) which means eventually it’ll gain its own independent staff team. Alleviating pressure from existing AVID staff to moderate what will be a tonne more content. Obviously AVID staff will still be involved in the site but I think if we keep it on AVID it will become an unmoderatable mess TLDR:

  • New Wiki keeps things organised and separate, and allows for much more detail
  • Bespoke name and focus of community will draw in lots of new people as the TV intro and logo communities are pretty different
  • Drawing new people in will bring about new members of staff to moderate the substantial increase in content the addition would bring about, alleviating pressure on existing AVID staff
  • Could still bring new editors over to AVID, not to mention existing AVID editors who’d help establish the new site
  • If we work with WikiForge/Tide could we automatically give AVID users a verified account on the new wiki to persuade people to edit?

What do you think?

  1. Support I usually don't vote on RFC pages that I started myself (though I didn't start the proposal in the first place, mind you), but I couldn't resist. Gilby1385 (talk) 18:04, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

    • I also gotta mention that the 1983-87 WDHV logo was the 1981-83 Walt Disney intro. The 1978-86 logo was the "Neon Mickey" logo. · Talk · Edits 22:17, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
  3. Support Wow. Thousands of TV shows. The Simpsons, SpongeBob SquarePants, Looney Tunes, Family Guy, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Amazing World of Gumball, ALL OF THEM. AVID will work hard on those. (TALKCONTRIBUTIONS) 20:15, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Abstain

 Abstain i don't necessarily hate it or like it, but i think this would be an OK addition. Robloxfan999 (talk) 22:54, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Comments

  1.  Comment: I feel like elaboration is needed on the front of it being a spin-off wiki to show that it wouldn't end up like the former Company Bumpers wiki. This proposal was only discussed in staffspace and has not been made particularly clear to the rest of the wiki's users as to how it would work.
