ArcLight Cinemas

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Not to be confused with Arclight Films, an unrelated Australian film company.

Background

ArcLight Cinemas was a luxury cinema chain founded in 2002, with locations all around Los Angeles; including Hollywood, Pasadena, Sherman Oaks, San Diego, among others (all of which have been designed by We Design LA). They are owned and operated by the Forman family's Decurion Corporation, which also owns sister chain Pacific Theatres. All ArcLight locations used Christie digital projectors. The ArcLight Dome in Hollywood uses THX sound systems. In 2021, Decurion Corporation announced that both the Arclight Cinemas and Pacific Theatres chains would be permanently closing after both chains were temporarily closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, citing impacts from the pandemic that left no viable way to continue both chains.

Background Trivia: Many Hollywood celebrities have visited an ArcLight, including British comedian James Corden, host of The Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS, who was employed there for a day.

Trailer (March 22, 2002-March 17, 2020)

Visuals: The screen fades in to a set of blue rippling curtains. After a few seconds, the curtains open to reveal a white light. As the screen zooms out it is revealed to be the "I" in the ArcLight logo, set over a navy-blue tinted cloud setting. After fully zooming out the illuminated logo blurs for a few seconds then returns to its normal state and shines. The text dims, then flashes shortly after. Finally, the screen fades out.

Technique: Computer animation by Class-Key Chew-Po Commercials, a division of Klasky Csupo.

Audio: In the beginning, there is a muffled synth note with a choir. After that we hear the flapping of the curtains as they open. As the animation continues, there is a dreamy synth/chime tune. At the final note, there is the same choir from the beginning of the logo. Composed by Danny Hulsizer of Elias Arts in Santa Monica, California.

Availability: Can be seen right before a film at every ArcLight location.
