Background
Disney Star is an Indian TV corporation. It was founded on 31 August 1990 as Quford Limited, which was owned by Hutchison Whampoa, which also owned the health and beauty retailer A.S. Watson Group at the time. The corporation was rebranded as HutchVision Channel Services Limited in January 1991 with the parent company, HutchVision (the company's name was basically a combination of the words "Hutchison" and "TeleVision") being founded back in December 1990.
In July 1991, the brand "STAR TV" was chosen as the final name for the new satellite service by HutchVision. On 21 August 1991, STAR TV was launched across Asia and the Middle East, with the first in-house channel "Prime Sports", showing sport programmes in a joint-venture with the Prime Network. The corporation went on to launch another set of channels, including a music channel (a joint-venture with MTV), a news channel (a joint-venture with the BBC), a Mandarin-language TV channel and lastly, an entertainment channel.
In July 1993, Rupert Murdoch, the owner of the News Corporation was announced to acquire the 63.6% shares on the STAR TV satellite service. The acquisition came after News Corporation failed to acquire TVB due to the regularity issues. In 1995, News Corporation finally took an 36.4% share on the satellite service, leading to Hutchison Whampoa's exit in the Hong Kong's satellite TV market.
In 2009, the STAR TV service was announced to split off its operations, leading off to several layoffs. The new companies will feature Star China Media, which now owns Xing Kong and the Channel V in the Mainland China; Star India now owns the "Star TV" brand in India and owned several channels (such as a localized feed of Star Movies and a now-defunct feed of Star World); and the original STAR TV corporation will continue off its operations across Asia and the Middle East.
During the 2010s, most channels owned by the STAR TV Network had an major change; Star Movies in Southeast Asia (except for the Philippines (SD feed) and Vietnam), Hong Kong and the Philippines (HD feed) was rebranded as Fox Movies Premium, ESPN Asia was rebranded as Fox Sports in 2013 (ending the joint-venture made by ESPN), Star Sports in Southeast Asia, Taiwan and Hong Kong was rebranded as Fox Sports 2, joining the Fox Sports Network in Asia, and finally Star World was rebranded as Fox Life in the Southeast Asian and the Hong Kong territories.
