Background

Médiavision et Jean Mineur is an advertising agency created in 1971 grouping the company created by Jean Mineur in 1951, the Havas group and the Publicis group, which offers advertisers advertising spaces on the cinema screens of the major film distribution channels. 2,000 French cinemas use its services.

1st Trailer (1951-1971)

Visuals: On a farm background with a target with "1000" on it, a miner with orange hair, blue clothes, and a blue hat holding a lantern and an axe named Petit Mineur (Little Miner) walks in from the right. He winks and then sets his lantern down as he prepares to throw the axe. He then throws the axe at the target, and the target zooms in. As the axe hits the target, the "1000" jumps off of it. It then turns itself upside down (reading "0001") while "Balzac" forms and a period is placed in the middle of the number. At the same time, the background changes to a blue version of the same background with the target. The Jean Mineur Publicité logo then fades in, followed by its address in place of the "Balzac 0001" text. The text then fades out, and Petit Mineur appears in the circle and winks.

Variants: Starting in 1962, many variants were made:

  • Petit Mineur throws the axe, revealing a scared cow behind the target. The cow then chases the miner. ”Balzac 0001” is already there, and Petit Mineur is in different clothing at the end.
  • Petit Mineur gets his axe stuck in the background, tearing the background. He then slides in the target background, and zooms in. In the end, the miner is with the ripped part of the background.
  • Petit Mineur prepares to throw the axe, until he finds a bottle of San Pellegrino inside his lantern. He opens the bottle, and a speech bubble saying "Bitter San Pellegrino” flies out. He then drinks it, and the opening continues as usual. The ending instead has him pulling out the bottle and winking.

Technique: Cel animation by Albert Champeaux inspired by a drawing by Lucien Jonas.

Audio: A melody composed using trumpets, which is composed by René Cloërec, a "boom" sound is heard when the axe hits the target. A spinning-like sound when the text "1000" turns upside down. After, a French announcer is heard saying the text appearing on screen. To finish, a short version of the music heard before plays.

Audio Variants:

  • For the Bitter San Pellegrino variant, a cartoon-like melody is heard, when Petit Mineur opens the bottle.
  • Sometimes, a swing sound is heard when Petit Mineur prepares to throw the axe and also when he throws the axe

Legacy: A very popular logo in France.

2nd Trailer (1971-1982)

Visuals: A red background fades in, and then turns into bokeh as multiple colored lines zoom in. It then cuts to brown footage with many colored horizontal lines forming, and then it starts curving. It then cuts to the bokeh background again as many colored circles and a ”MV” symbol zoom in. The line sequence is shown again, except they form the "MV" symbol. It then turns red and pink, "mediavision" comes from both sides, and two outlines of Petit Mineur come from both sides and place itself on the bottom right. It then fades to the bokeh background again, but pink. "presenté" appears below the text.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: TBA.

3rd Trailer (1982-1998)

Visuals: A remake of the 1st trailer, except the background is simpler, and the target is orange and red. When he hits the target, it fades to a blue geometric background and the target morphs into the ”MV” symbol from the previous logo. “médiavision" types itself in, followed by "cinéma et publicité, Jean Mineur” and the address. It then gets replaced with Médiavision’s phone number. The "MV" symbol disappears, and Petit Mineur winks at the viewer.

Variants:

  • In 1995, a variant for French optician Alain Afflelou was made, where he gives Petit Mineur glasses after he misses the target.
  • In 1984, a variant for Peugeot and their 205 cars was made.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: TBA.

4th Trailer (1998-2017)

Visuals: In space, there is Petit Mineur, now in 3D and standing on a golden ticket with a filmstrip below it. He then goes down the filmstrip on the flying ticket, and reaches Earth. It then sends him to France, which sends him to a cinema. He enters the cinema, and then throws his axe at a screen. It hits the "1000" target, and then flashes to space as the numbers fly away and "médiavision” flies in letter by letter. Petit Mineur flies on the ticket before settling on the target. "et JEAN MINEUR” fades in below the text, and Médiavision’s phone number flies in number by number except for "0001”. The ticket then flies towards the miner, and the afromentioned numbers fly in number by number. Médiavision’s address fades in below.

Variants:

  • A short version exists, where Petit Mineur jumps on the ticket, and "médiavision” forms next to him, followed by ”presenté” below it.
    • A Dutch version of this exists, where "médiavision" is replaced by an oval with "jean mineur mediavision" in it, and "presenté" is replaced by "presenteert."
    • An ending version of the Dutch variant exists, where "presenteert" doesn't appear and it instead zooms in to the logo, with a static image of Petit Mineur fading on it. ”Bioscoopreclame” zooms out, and later flips over to reveal "Amsterdam", which flashes and slowly zooms in.
  • Another short version exists, which is the end of the trailer, except "et JEAN MINEUR" is replaced by "CINEMA ET PUBLICITE - JEAN MINEUR", and the address is replaced by Médiavision's URL.
  • A variant for the "All You Can Tweet" campaign by the telecommunications company Hi in the Netherlands exists. Here, Petit Mineur is holding a bag of popcorn, and he instead kicks the ticket, sending it flying down the filmstrip. He then pulls out his phone, sets his popcorn down and sits on the filmstrip, He starts eating the popcorn, with the ticket flying around as a yellow speech bubble pops in next to him. "All You Can" writes in a cursive font in the speech bubble, followed by "TWEET, POST & WHATSAPP” appearing word by word. The miner lays down on the filmstrip, and another speech bubble with "ZONDER EXTRA KOSTEN" pops in below. The Hi commercial tag appears not long after.
  • A variant for the French internet service provider Alice ADSL exists. The trailer starts as normal, but Petit Mineur flies to a building with an ad for Alice ADSL with model Vanessa Hessler. Hessler then takes Petit Mineur's axe, and kisses him. It cuts to Petit Mineur flying through France with her. Hessler then takes off the miner’s hat. As they fly in the cinema, Hessler throws the axe instead, and the target is instead the Alice ADSL logo. It then proceeds to the trailer's normal animation, except Petit Mineur isn't there, and the hotline is already formed. It then cuts to Hessler and Petit Mineur (on the golden ticket) on a white background with the Alice ADSL logo and the URL.
  • A variant for Lego’s Star Wars sets exists. In it, Petit Mineur jumps into Lego spacecraft with Chewbacca, and then fights the Death Star’s spacecraft. The miner still arrives in Earth, and flies to the cinema, but the posters in the cinema are of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. When he gets towards the entrance, the spacecraft gets stuck and Petit Mineur flies into the theater. He sees Darth Vader, holding a red lightsaber, who flops down after using it, and Petit Mineur stands on him and throws the axe, except the target is made of Lego bricks and has the Lego logo. The trailer continues as normal, except Lego bricks are flying everywhere and the address is replaced by the URL. It then cuts to an ad for Lego's Star Wars sets, and then segues into the Lego commercial tag.
  • A variant for Kleenex exists. Here, Petit Mineur is sneezing and it’s raining. When he goes to France, he sneezes rapidly, and when he enters the cinema, he gets stuck on the glass. Later, Petit Mineur enters the theater and sneezes, but then he sees an ad for Kleenex. It cuts to the miner using a Kleenex tissue. He then becomes happy, and proceeds to throw the ax as usual, except there’s no target and the Kleenex logo replaces it. An ad for Kleenex follows the logo animation.
  • A variant for the sports equipment company Salomon exists. Here, Petit Mineur is instead on a mountain, and skis through it. The miner shows off his snowboard, which is Salomon-branded. He then goes through the cinema, but when he enters the theater, it cuts to him on a surfboard in the ocean, which is revealed to be on the screen. He flies off, and the Salomon logo forms. Petit Mineur throws the axe at the logo, and the trailer continues as usual, except the URL is below the hotline. It then cuts to the Salomon logo on a black background, with Petit Mineur surfing, revealing text saying "VETEMENTS", ”CHAUSSURES”, "MATERIEL DE SPORT", and Salomon's URL.
  • A variant for Panasonic's 3D TVs exist, where Petit Mineur is wearing Panasonic 3D glasses. He takes them off and blinks, and it pans to a Panasonic TV with an ocean background on it. Suddenly, a shark leaps out of the TV, with some clownfish, and proceeds to scare Petit Mineur. He then shows his tongue, which has a black circle with ”3D" and the Panasonic logo on it. The miner looks at it, and takes the circle. He then waves at the shark, and the shark flies away. The miner then enters the TV and flies through the filmstrip. He then throws the axe, which then comes back towards the screen, hitting the target. It abruptly cuts to the bottom of the bullseye, and "mediavision" and the hotline fly in, along with "et JEAN MINEUR” fading in between the two. They shine and slowly zoom in. It then cuts to Petit Mineur on the TV. He takes off his 3D glasses and winks.

Technique: CGI animation by Barejo Productions. Most of the variants were done by A. Champeux.

Visuals: In a futuristic city, there is Petit Mineur with his axe, winking at the viewer. He then falls down and flies through the city. He points at something, revealed to be a futuristic cinema with many movie posters, and flies to it. It abruptly cuts to the target from the 4th trailer, with the axe on it. The miner grabs the axe as ”mediavision” flies in letter by letter and the Facebook and Twitter icons fade in the lower right. Petit Mineur then poses with the axe.

Technique: CGI animation by Barejo Productions and A. Champeux.

6th Trailer (2021-)

Visuals: In a nighttime scene of France with a cinema in view, the screen pans down to a chunk of rock with an axe stuck in it. Petit Mineur walks to the rock, and grabs the axe. Suddenly, a police car passes by him, and then he sees a knight, an astronaut, a dinosaur, and a mecha. The miner gets on the ticket from the 4th logo and flies away. It cuts to a giant robot and some dragons, while Petit Mineur flies through them. He then flies toward the cinema, where the police car, the mecha, and a carousel are coming. The police car, the carousel and a horse, the astronaut, three tiny versions of the giant robot, and Petit Mineur enter the cinema, and the miner throws the axe at the screen. The astronaut, the dragon, and the dinosaur go towards the screen before the axe hits the target on a space background. As it hits it, it cuts to "mediavision" and "et Jean Mineur" below it, as Petit Mineur flies in and settles, carrying the ticket.

Technique: CGI animation by A. Champeux and Busterwood.
